I knew there was something we could agree on. I agree with every word of this post.

You do know that forgiving debt drives up the costs even more. Will look up the study but the main reason for the massive drive up in graduate and post graduate costs over the last 30 years was the easy access/flooding of government money (thru loans and grants).

Re: The Most Fresh & Cordial Political Thread Ever

It's the same thing as with the baby formula shortage - throw money at a problem without solving the underlying issues. It's the same thing all the time with these fuckers. They have no problem sitting up there being "in charge", willy nilly spending our hard earned money, while not fixing a damn thing. I couldn't be more opposed to this.

https://www.cnbc.com/2022/08/24/bide...inflation.html

"The National Taxpayers Union’s estimate of costs per taxpayer is based on data from the Penn Wharton Budget Model, which found the total cost of proposal could be $329.1 billion over 10 years, based on $10,000 in forgiveness for borrowers with less than $125,000 in income."

"Based on a total of under 158 million taxpayers in 2019, that works out to $2,085.59 per taxpayer, the National Taxpayers Union found."

"Canceling student debt will boost near-term inflation more than the Inflation Reduction Act that was recently enacted would reduce it, the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget found in a recent analysis. Moreover, it found that canceling student debt would also undermine the deficit reductions in that law recently passed by Democrats."

“Higher education is one of the most difficult, thorny problems that you really need to get into how universities and graduate schools are financed and what kinds of changes would make it more affordable. This accomplishes none of that.”

Yeah, let's just all be happy. Let's also be happy for those of us who will now have a financial burden, because we are picking up the bill for those who now have their financial burdens eased?

Let's be real...this isn't about being concerned over what "we're" not getting out of the deal. It's about not addressing the real issues. It's punishing the wrong people monetarily, and not holding the right people, systems, and entities accountable.

But whatevs - let's just all be happy. That's what our government wants. Give me your hard earned money so I can turn it into more problems, and we can all be happy...

Funny how we never hear a big stink when the truly wealthy get the tax breaks, or corporations. But man, give something to the little guy and everyone loses their shit.

Northern democrats are pushing for SALT cap increases which only benefit the top 1% or the truly wealthy…and increasing IRS size which will overwhelmingly target small business, working and middle class. And they just raised taxes on them as well as energy prices.

Democrats spending lead to this inflation and energy prices increases as well…they are still spending without regard to the economic environment

There's a difference between "losing your shit", and just wanting your government to fix the real problems, rather than just constantly throwing money at them.

The tax code is a problem. No news there. Those who have the lawyers and accountants to find all the loop holes are at a big advantage. One more thing we have all been wanting our awesome government to fix for y e a r s...but here we are...

Re: The Most Fresh & Cordial Political Thread Ever

College costs are just insane.

Wish State schools took more in state students vs prioritizing out of state tuition. You live in Maryland but UMD defers you bc they prioritize out of state tuitions from NJ/NY. Flip side, Nj/NY kid gets deferred by Rutgers bc they prioritize out of state tuitions from MD.

So NJ/NY kid pays 50k a year to go to MD, MD kid pays 50k a year to go to Rutgers.

Colleges get more money. Student lenders get more money.

Parents and kids get straddled with decades of debt.

I know we all cant be born into the billionaire Swanson food family but at least we should take their advice on "boot straps" and "hard work" from them.

-----------------

College costs and health care .... we need some real solutions. College cant just be for the elite and international.

Our kids get told to go to community college for 2 years .. so rich out of state and international kids can enjoy the "american college experience".

Re: The Most Fresh & Cordial Political Thread Ever

One easy practical step

Increase annual amount the 529 funds can be used. Currently in Maryland its 10k per year. 10k isnt a door opener when our kids have to go to Rutgers for 50k a year bc out in state school de prioritizes us.

Just increase it to 20k a year. Then have riders that increase it by 1k every year.

Meanwhile, Ivy League shithole endowments are taken and invested into securities on Wall Street.

Democrats are the elitest these days

If we're talking about fair share like Chico mentioned, tax the churches too then.

Re: The Most Fresh & Cordial Political Thread Ever

If organized religion wants to keep flexing their influence into politics, let them pay taxes. The Catholic Church is one of the wealthiest organizations in the world and they don't exactly have a very transparent financial track record. And guess what, the Vatican has investments in some of the biggest companies in the world. Let's not pretend their hands are clean.
