Jaws breaks down Campbell
Great article, though it is disappointing to hear about all the breakdowns in protection.

Re: Jaws breaks down Campbell
Great read! I have respect for Jaws, and I feel like he says what he thinks. Fair assessment for JC. Good soild performance. Good call on the line as well. Full of holes this season

Re: Jaws breaks down Campbell
Great, great article. It's disconcerting to hear a second knowledgeble source comment on Jansen's lack of stoutness. We must improve up front. In watching the Chefs last night, I noticed that their line is very quick and agile. I think this is key to executing Saunder's running game. Our guys seem stiff and slow compared to them. (The Chefs and the Broncos have two of the lightest O-lines in the league). If we stay with Al, we need to make some changes there. Bugel may not be the right line coach to teach those techniques. His background is all about size and strength and overwhelming the defense. Power football. I'm not saying we should stay with Saunders, but if we do, we have to make changes.
The other disappointing comment was to hear that Campbell was late with the ball. The QBs that have been successful in this type of attack (Troy Aikman and Trent Green leap to mind) were great at releasing the ball just as the receiver was coming out of his break. This requires field vision and anticipation. I remember being at Fedex in '98 and Green threw a deep out to L. Shepherd that was gone before Leslie even made his cut. I had a great angle on it. When the ball is released on time like that, the defenders get frozen because the receiver hasn't given them anything to react to yet. Henry Ellard was great at that. Great at not tipping off the secondary. When he got to the top of his route he could break it off any of six or seven different ways and only the QB (hopefully) and the coach knew which way that was. With Campbell, though, it may be that he just needs to gain more familiarity with the system. I hope that's the case. Some quarterbacks just can't do it. I saw Tony Banks play for us a couple of times in person and he could not release the ball until he had seen the receiver standing there open in the same spot for at least three seconds. I exagerate, but you get the idea.

Re: Jaws breaks down Campbell
yeah, great article. I read it & had both hope & despair, but like Jaws said things like the missed protection happen all the time to teams w/bad records, it seems an indication of poor effort or communication, but hopefully isn't an indication of poor personnel.

Re: Jaws breaks down Campbell
Campbell's flaws right now are to be expected. For his first start I came away very impressed. He can only improve from here on out.
I'm really hoping that Jansen's struggles are due to injury more than anything else. Remember after the win over Dallas he was limping badly. As we've seen in the past from him he'll play through just about anything. He could be hurting more than we even know right now. |

Re: Jaws breaks down Campbell
The most encouraging thing is that they think he is an NFL quarterback - something that could not be said of a number of recent QB busts (Shuler, Wueffrel or however you spell his name, etc). Worrying that the o-line is giving up such big plays and I'm concerned that this can't be rectified with current personel.

Re: Jaws breaks down Campbell
#1 I love how he calls out the Saunders-haters.
#2 Jansen has been getting bull-rushed and beat around the edges for quite some time. He hasn't been a top-flight RT in 3 years. #3 Definately encouraged by the article. |

Re: Jaws breaks down Campbell
Great article.
I thought it was interesting to see how much can be attributed to protection and line play. There are so many things we can't see on tv, and often broken plays are due to poor protection, not necessarily a bad play call or bad throw. This is relevant to the Skins for 2 reasons: 1. It shows how much our O-line breakdowns are hurting us. I wasn't thrilled to read this... "For Jaworski, this is the play of the game. He loves Saunders's game plan, but says the pass protection, particularly tackles Jon Jansen and Chris Samuels, is preventing touchdown opportunities. Jansen, Jaworski says, is "getting pushed backwards more than I've ever seen him," while Cosell considers Samuels "a nice player, but not an anchor over there." ...but I doubt this comes as a big surprise to any of us. Jansen no longer appears to be a stabilizing force on our line. And Samuels, though decent, has never really taken his game to the next level and ANCHORED this line. I have nothing against Samuels, but he's our biggest cap hit, and has received more cash than any Redskins player in HISTORY. I just wish he was more dominant, but it looks like that may never happen. 2. It shows how a lack of pressure from our D-line makes life so much easier on the opposing offense. Even when the opposing offense calls the right play against us and has us beat, some pressure from our D-line can still turn the play in our favor. "There's your touchdown. . . . They beat the defense. The problem is that the defense beats the protection." The bottom line is we are losing the war in the trenches. |

Re: Jaws breaks down Campbell
As for Campbell, I was pretty impressed with his play, especially considering it was his first start.
But did anyone else notice he seems to throw a weird ball??? I don't know how to describe it. It looks like he's palming the ball and every time he throws it looks like the ball is gonna go straight into the ground. Anyone else notice this? |

Re: Jaws breaks down Campbell
It's good to know that the Saunders offense is showing TD opportunities on film. I really believe that if the O-line improves the protection, this offense will really take off with Campbell. Our WRs simply have too much speed for opposing defenses that fail to get in the QBs face.

Re: Jaws breaks down Campbell
Not that it is going to save us this season. if you believe any of the Gibbs rant thing. maybe these boys can play for pride or for their jobs for next year amd give an inclination in the next few games of what Al's O can do?

It does seem different. I think that this is what Jaws and the young Cosell were referencing when they were discussing his windup. At first I thought it just seemed weird because he's right handed and tall whereas we've been watching Brunell for a while who was left handed and short (for a quarterback). He seems to be decently accurate so as long as he doesn't get stripped by the rushers on his release, I don't think they should mess with it.
