Who should we go for in Free Agency?

Who do you think we should get? I think we should go get a CB to replace Hall, someone like Byron Maxwell. I think it would be a huge upgrade. Do you guys think we should spend around 5-6M to bring in a guy like Maxwell?

Here is a list of all the FA's: NFL Free Agents Tracker 2015 - WalterFootball.com

Re: Who should we go for in Free Agency?

We've got a shit roster, no big deals, and no Shawn Lauvao's either. In other words, I don't want us to be anywhere near major players in free agency. Maybe 2-3 solid signings, like an '04 type year where we bring in Springs, Marcus Washington, Cornie Griffin, and call it a day. AKA bring in a few solid guys for solid deals. Anybody who thinks this roster can be totally redeemed in FA needs to be taken behind the shed. I'm really hoping draft day is when we'll see some real progress.

those weren't small deals. they all got paid more than lauvao, not even factoring inflation. the key difference is that those were good players that lived up to their contracts.

I should've clarified better, I'm ok with handing solid players solid contracts. All of those guys were players that weren't old and had been solid players at their previous places. But when I say no more Lauvao deals, I'm talking solid starter money for an average/mediocre player.

Re: Who should we go for in Free Agency?

Here's McClaughan's history:

Quote:
...In order to get an idea of what he might do, let’s take a look back at 2005, when he took over personnel decisions for the 49ers as their vice president of player personnel. San Francisco had gone 2-14 the previous year so it obviously was a roster that was in just as bad a shape as is the current Redskins’ roster.

McCloughan, however, did not go on a spending spree to pump up the Niners’ roster. He brought in two free agents who found their way into the starting lineup. Johnny Morton, a 35-year-old receiver, was signed away from the Loins and defensive end Marques Douglas, 28, came from the Ravens. Neither was a big splash signing. That was it. All of the other starters were either holdovers or McCloughan draft picks from 2005.

One other note here: McCloughan had come to the 49ers from the Seahawks and, as noted, started with the Packers. He did not sign any players who had been with his previous employers. So those of you trying to connect the dots and bring Frank Gore or Vernon Davis to Washington should think twice.

Putting what McCloughan said and what he has done together it looks like the Redskins will not be big players in the free agent market but they won’t be sitting on the sidelines either. Look for them to plug a few holes with some younger players who won’t break the bank or perhaps with an older player on a one-year deal....

Need to Know: How will Redskins’ GM McCloughan handle free agency? | Rich Tandler's Real Redskins

Based on this limited history, he seems unlikely to bring his old players (49ers / Seahawks), and instead seems to like older fill-in-the-void players who don't make splashes. This will be a boring FA and hopefully an exciting draft..

Re: Who should we go for in Free Agency?

While I agree free agency will/should be relatively quiet, I think from a free agency standpoint there is a ton of decent talent out there. In fact I think this is the most talented free agent class that I can remember. A lot of front offices are looking at how Seattle, Green Bay have been built are are following the trend of build from within. Lots of regime change the last couple years as well, so you want "your guys" and will let some walk.

That being said I think there could be some decent bargins...a couple guys I would be in favor of is jermaine Gresham TE and nt/dt Dan Williams. Gresham is a damn solid blocking TE who can also catch the ball...we haven't had a good blocking TE since Cooley. Williams would be a solid addition IMO. Can't get enough solid players on the dline.

Another decent, reasonable signing would be another cincy guy, Clint boling at guard. I think he would be a much better value than iupati.

IMO Unless we plan on taking Shelton at #5, Dan Williams for reasonable $$ could be a nice pickup.
