IF the CBA doesn't get signed...

Will teams be able to simply drop a player without any sort of retribution? Can you dump big salaries for no penelty?

Re: IF the CBA doesn't get signed...

I think the more important question, for me at least, is will they strike or not play football in the coming seasons?

there wouldn't be a strike. The players will make more money without the cap than with it. It will be interesting to see how this would effect the following year if the agreement is signed and the cap would go back in place the following year.

Without the cap teams will be able to act freeley without any cap penalties what so ever. This means any additions or subtractions will not cost the teams. Which, if Danny has his say, will definately benefit the Redskins. He will go out and add any player out there. And, as seen many times before, players will come to Washington before anyone else based solely on the contracts he offers. This may work in our favor, but I dont think its the best thing to do for long term effects. We all saw how disfunctional we were in 2000 with all the big name guys we brought in to buy a superbowl.

The redskins will make the yankees look like pikers with all the high priced talent they will sign. Not having a CBA would be the best thing that could happen for the redskins because they would outspend every team in the nfl and likely buy their way to a championship.

In an uncapped NFL, there would be fewer free agents because players would not be eligible for free agency until after 6 years in the league, as opposed to the current 4.

Re: IF the CBA doesn't get signed...

As I have said in all of my post, the Redskins have been setting up their contracts for the uncapped year. All of our big contracts have huge numbers for the uncapped year. Danny boy has been playing this card from day 1. We will be in great position for that year and years to come. We have constantly outpaced the league in dollars from wise decisions. Now some of our signnings have not panned out but we are a finacial model for success. HEnce the reason that Upshaw wants a piece of the revenues that Danny has added to.

As dumb as this may sound, you can all of the talent in the world and still not win it all. Look at the Yankees. How did they lose this year. And with our luck we could have all the talent and still lose.

I'd like to hear why you feel this way, CC. I've thought about it two ways. Either get rid of the cap, and return to the days of the 1980's and let good teams stay together.

Or, allow each team to pay up to three players whatever they ask for and whatever the owner is willing to part with. And make their salaries exempt from the cap -- the other 50 players' salaries will be governed by a cap similar to what the current system is. That way, teams can keep their Emmitt Smiths, LaVar Arringtons, and Jerry Rices.

Revenue sharing and the cap are the main reason the NFL is so successful. From what I've read they're fighting over relative scraps here. I don't think it would be the end of the world to have an uncapped year, but it definitely sets a bad precedent.
