Let me clarify my statement above. The Redskins are not now and have not been for the last five years concerned with "building for the future". The idea is to win this year and get in the playoffs and see what happens then.

If you are looking at THIS YEAR - and maybe next year as the farthest into the future that one can imagine - Eddie George can do as much for this team if not more than ANY running back on the roster at the moment except Clinton Portis. He cannot carry the ball 25 times a game anymore for more than a week or so. But the only way that anyone on this team carries the ball 25 times or more for more than one week other than Portis means that Portis is hurt. And if Portis is hurt, you are smoking some high quality stuff if you believe that Cartwright or Betts or Canidate or Simon is going to step in and average 150 yards from scrimmage per game. George would merely be the short yardage back and the guy who comes in for three or four plays to give Portis a blow.

The issue is COST. If George costs three times what Cartwright and Betts cost, then you hang up the phone with his agent and move on to the next item. But if you can have him for what those guys cost, you would be NUTS to keep them and let him go elsewhere. Remember, this is about winning now and not in 2009. If Joe Gibbs hasn't gotten past 8-8 by 2009, he's going to be heading on out of here...

The question is not cost, because Eddie George is not delusional. He knows he's not going to sign a big money contract this year, but he just is playing the game with the Titans. Last year the Titans asked a LB to restructure his contract, then proceeded to cut him. Eddie is taking a stand, he's not saying he's worth all this money but he is saying that he wants to be dealt with fairly. Whatever.

At the vet minimum, I'd love to see Eddie George in DC. He'd be like George Rogers, and it wouldn't matter if he only averaged 3.4 yds per carry because he'd only be in on 3rd and short anyway. Portis is the workhorse, EG would just be a veteran warrior to plug in while Portis catches a breather. At 6'3" and 240 he's a load and I'd love to see him running the 50 gut for us this fall.

I have a ton of respect for the guy, but I'd be surprised if he has more than two productive years left in those legs.

Emmit Smith makes over 4 million a year as an old back past his prime. George will get his money from somewhere, his agent will convince someone he is worth it. And you coudlnt sign anyone for less that 3 times Rock and Ladells salary, they are on rookie onctracts and were late round picks, thats as low as your going to get.

Curmudgeon, you say the issue is Cost. True, but I would also argue that another issue is pride. I don't think Eddie George is ready to be a short-yardage, specialty back. At least I don't think he feels that way.

Eddie George is a class act. He should retire as a Titan.

I hope he takes a paycut to stay with them, or just retire. He was a class act and after so many years with that team why would he want to go somewhere else for a year or two.

George can still be an effective back in a limited role, I don't think he needs to retire just yet unlike someone like Emmitt who is clearly just hanging on, why I don't know.

I hope Sultan McCullah wins out as backup. He was one of the greatest running backs in college history yardage wise. And I thought he looked great last year. Hes cheap and on the roster. Either way we are all praying Portis stays healthy

I suspect that the odds are 50/50 that Sultan McGillicudy is one of the top ten running backs in the history of his school.

http://sultanmccullough.com/uscstats.html

Quote:
CAREER: McCullough's 2,800 career yards put him eighth on USC's career rushing list (33rd on the Pac-10 list). He rushed for 100 yards 11 times in his career. He became the first Trojan since Charles White in 1977-79 to lead USC in rushing for 3 consecutive seasons.
So, not sucky, but not a college football history benchmark either.

Seriously, though. http://sultanmccullough.com?!?

I think Ron Dayne is somewhere near the top of the list for all-time college rushing yards and he's not exactly striking fear in any opponents at the NFL level
