Re: Casserly Keeping his options open
Shuler's gotten filthy rich off real estate here in East Tennessee. He wasn't so hot at QB, but he's running a very successful company.

Re: Casserly Keeping his options open
If I recall right, Casserly wanted Shuler and Galloway. Norv wanted Dilfer and Westbrook. So they basically compromised

Re: Casserly Keeping his options open
Take a look at this link of the 1994 draft...there were PLENTY of big players on that list, but that might have been the worst QB draft year of all time.

Re: Casserly Keeping his options open
Casserly can be pegged w/some bad picks, as most gm's can. Shuler was not a bad pick, he just didn't turn out to be the player we'd hoped, there's a big difference. You can only draft guys based on their past & their potential. Shuler had big upsides w/both, w/no history of off field problems. That he didn't become a solid pro qb is for many reasons, but I bet the vast majority of GMs at the time had him rated high. Same w/Desmond Howard, good guy, good teamate, never became a star (except his SB MVP).
I would go so far as to say that Norv screwed up Shuler's confidence by opting for Frerotte, when in that preseason they were neck and neck. Shuler had a lot more upside. Bad draft picks & personel decisions happen when teams take players that have a history they DIDN'T find out about, whether it's a bad knee or rap sheet. |

Re: Casserly Keeping his options open
You figured it out! Actually I am not saying get Casserly tommorow - I just prefer the team hire a competent GM with a good long term vision of building through the draft and picking up a good free agent or two to compliment the mix. I think you would agree like most on the board that Vinny Cerrato is not that person as he left the 49ers in shambles and his track record here is not something to brag about. How many teams in the NFL would bring in Vinny Cerrato as their main personelle man? Maybe the Lions as Matt Millen is awful. Other than that I thnk most teams would take a pass on him and tell Cerrato he can get his online gig at ESPN he used to have. |

Re: Casserly Keeping his options open
I would totally keep Vinny out of this. Don't the coaches make all the personnel decisions? Everyone is always, "GM! WE NEED A GM!!!!!!!" So we almost struck out in our FA acquisitions this year, so what? Overall, Gibbs and staff have made overwhelmingly positive decisions with regard to the draft and free agency. Sure we let Pierce and Smoot go, but would a GM have prevented that from happening? I think our talent evaluation is fine save for the Archuleta signing.

TJ Duckett and losing a 3rd rounder Giving up 2 draft choices for LLoyd AA signing for huge $ when scouts league wide knew he could cover Thinking Brunell is a starter in this league for the last 3 years There's a couple more-just can't think of them right now. |

Don't forget the Skins may have to swap 1st rounders with Denver for the Duckett deal if Denver keeps losing and we keep winning. If not the Redskins will also give up a 4th rounder to Denver for the Duckett transaction. Another to add to the list - trading a 3rd rounder for Brunnell when he was going to be cut shortly thereafter. How about giving up a 6th rounder for James Thrash - don't laugh but a guy by the name of Colston on the Saints was drafted in the 6th round and he could have been our answer instead spending the picks on of Llyod. Outside of the draft pick issue, the bonuses the Redskins are giving out to players has been quite high to say the least. I saw AA laughing all the way to the bank - even if we cut him after this year he is still guranteed to pull in $10 million - pretty good for being captain of the punt team if you ask me. I will say the Betts contract was pleasantly surprising. Lets see if they go back to their old ways and break the bank for Dockery. |
