Two true Redskins.
Regardless of any cap savings, I'm glad they did this. Thomas is our best lineman, and Sellers is nothing but a football player cut from the old mold.
Very happy with this.

Not only that, I'm happy to see they're anticipating the contracts going up exponentially. Good to sign him now before the inflation later on.

I know some people may never understand this, but we can't bust the bank on Dockery. If he wants a signing bonus of $17M forget about it, he's just not worth it. Let someone else overpay for a slightly above average player.

After CC updates his cap sheets to include our FA class, I think I'm going to crunch the 2008/2009 numbers just to show everyone just how right you are.

This is only a negotiating figure folks. When you put in your salary requirements, you don't ask for what you currently make, or less, do you? Or course he's not worth that amount of money. He won't get that from another team either. When testing the free agent market, which just started today, you can't take the first deal thrown at you prior to. Now this type of thing has backfired before. Dockery could be without a team for a while before settling for '2nd string' money. The skins may have to make another costly move to aquire a starting quality G via the draft or trade.

Dock is not going to be on the market long. there are several teams out there willing to pay one of the up and coming YOUNG, dominant run blocking guards in the NFL. He will get 10million up front if not more.

I like the idea of re-signing Fox. Insurance policy for Archuleta.

Re: Redskins.com: Sellers, Thomas New Deals

We're always wishing the Skins would be more financially responsible... but for some reason that has gone out the window lately when talking about Dockery.

He's not a player you look at and say we need to sign this guy at any cost.

Yes, continuity and rewarding your own are important things, but with the crazy deals that will be coming down this offseason we need to keep things in perspective. I mean c'mon, Nate Clements getting a bonus of $24M??!! That is freaking insane!

Dockery is the 5th best lineman we have... at best he's tied for 4th best with Rabach. He isn't irreplaceable. Far from it.

Question is, who do we replace him with? Previous lower round draftees, haven't impressed coaches much. Does this point to trading for another day one pick?

Yeah but the price of a competent free agent guard isn't going to go down next season. Teams aren't going to look back on this season and say "man what were we thinking, we should pay these players less."

Next year, a competent free agent like Dockery will command $14 million instead of $12 million.

You want to get away from paying through the nose for competent players, then we have to get more draft centric (which I know everyone wants around here). But keep in mind, contracts for draft picks are going up, too. The increasing salary cap is causing these higher contracts; rising tides lift all boats.

Would you give Dockery $17M up front?

$17 M? No. That's too high even in the new world order.

But I'd give him $12 million, which is what La Canfora has said he's expecting to get.

$12M would be more reasonable, Steinbach will set the market though. I wouldn't expect anything to happen with Dock until he signs.
