Re: THIS Years Free Agent Class Is Incredible!!

DON'T even think about Hall! Definitely a problem guy. Would be funny if he went to dallas & started fighting w/TO for attention.

I sure hope Dallas can't land Samuel or Trufant, those guys are good & they would be a big upgrade over Henry.

I hope we keep Springs & let him finish here, maybe draft a cb, depending on who is available. I'm of the opinion that we have to prioritize, but in no particular order: OL,DL,CB, WR, maybe a young qb too. It all depends on the best players that are there when we draft. If the staff sees a great cb prospect in the 1st who has more upside than a d or o linemen, take him.

I think this kind of sums of my previous posts - we aren't going to be players in free agency - especially for elite corners. Lets just accept the fact that we need to go the draft route for once and I'll bet you in a couple of years we be glad for it.

I saw this but was too embarrassed to post it. There's only a $25 million dollar difference b/n us and 2nd to last. No biggie, no need to worry, nothing to see here.

Re: THIS Years Free Agent Class Is Incredible!!

Snyder will use the bonus/restructure on some of this, but I agree we won't be up front in FA on the big guys this year. C'est la vie. But if we need money, we'll find the money--there hasn't been a cap to stop us yet.

Canuck, are you out there? What's the prognosis, o Canadian Capologist?

Re: THIS Years Free Agent Class Is Incredible!!

In the interests of addressing the fact that we're $20 million over the cap next year, here's a post I wrote about a month ago in another thread:

I'm going to list the ways to get the cap number down. You can debate the merit of making certain moves on this list, but if we don't cut a certain player, you can bet we'd restructure them, which would also save some money.

Expected Roster Cuts:
Phillip Daniels - $3.0 million saved
Mark Brunell - $3.4 million saved
Total Savings for Cuts: $6.4 million

Keeping These Players, Restructuring 2008 Base Salary, Prorating over Remaining life of Contract:
Randy Thomas - $4.3 million saved
Clinton Portis - $3.8 million saved
Jon Jansen - $3.7 million saved
Chris Samuels - $3.4 million saved
Cornelius Griffin - $2.8 million saved
Santana Moss - $2.4 million saved
Casey Rabach - $1.8 million saved
Total Salary Restructure Savings: $22.2 million

Keeping These Players, Restructuring 2008 Roster Bonuses, Prorating over Remaining life of Contract:
Ladell Betts - $1.7 million saved
Clinton Portis - $0.4 million saved
Andre Carter - $1.9 million saved
Antwaan Randle-El - $1.2 million saved
Total Bonus Restructure Savings: $5.2 million

So I see ways to reduce our 2008 cap number by about $34 million. So do I think armageddon is coming next year? NO.

But I wouldn't go making ALL of the moves I listed above, either. We're starting to push a little too much into the future. And if we get rid of Brandon Lloyd, that move will eat up some more space.

Bottom line, we won't have to dismantle the team, but we won't have lots of flexibility, either. We'll need to draft very well.

I don't think large free agent moves are in our future.

Good post. What about better luck with injuries, gettting better performances out players like Lloyd (LMAO), having our young Qb progress and having a good draft?? I like this idea over chasing more free agents trying to get paid.

If you cut the following, the cap savings is barely 8 million.

Portis
Brunell
Jansen
Lloyd
Washington
Springs
Griffin
Daniels
Taylor

You can cut all of these players, for a total cap savings of 8.175 million and STILL BE 12 million over the cap.

If you cut your Starting RB, Starting RT, Starting DE, Starting DT, Starting OLB, and Starting CB, you are still 12 million over the cap.

Damn...Good Luck

WTF does it matter what it saves to cut those players? With maybe 2 exceptions, those players aren't going anywhere.

Who said cut all these guys? The crucial move that's kept us out of cap hell is RESTRUCTURING deals. Danny can do that because he's got the cash to pay out in various bonuses carefully arranged for maximal cap savings.

Read Schneed's original post. Only minimal cuts...

The numbers you're posting are accurate, but you're not making any sense.

First off, cutting Jon Jansen would actually cause a cap hit instead of saving money. And given that he's still our starter at RT, I have no earthly inkling why we would do that.

But more importantly, cutting players is not the only way to drop salary from your cap. Daniels and Brunell are the two guys that will yield significant savings from being cut, otherwise the benefit to cutting other players is far outweighed by keeping their skill set on the roster.

We can save significant amounts of cap money (up to $27.5 million), should we choose to, by restructuring the base salaries and roster/workout bonuses of the following players:

Keeping These Players, Restructuring 2008 Base Salary, Prorating over Remaining life of Contract:
Randy Thomas - $4.3 million saved
Clinton Portis - $3.8 million saved
Jon Jansen - $3.7 million saved
Chris Samuels - $3.4 million saved
Cornelius Griffin - $2.8 million saved
Santana Moss - $2.4 million saved
Casey Rabach - $1.8 million saved
Total Salary Restructure Savings: $22.2 million

Keeping These Players, Restructuring 2008 Roster Bonuses, Prorating over Remaining life of Contract:
Ladell Betts - $1.7 million saved
Clinton Portis - $0.4 million saved
Andre Carter - $1.9 million saved
Antwaan Randle-El - $1.2 million saved
Total Bonus Restructure Savings: $5.2 million

New England is $10 million under the cap right now. If they really want to keep Samuel, they can pay him more than we can.

The Falcons are under the cap and can keep Hall if they really want.

Seattle also is $10 million under the cap, so they can keep Trufant if they want.

If these guys even hit the market, other teams will outbid us (unless we're stupid).
