Re: Redskins Best Ever Defensive Tackle

I'm sorry, but Cornelius Griffin doesn't belong in the running here.

Butz all the way.

Butz, but I must say Darryl Grant was also a beast.

Re: Redskins Best Ever Defensive Tackle

Since a team neeeds two DTs, I would pick Butz at #1 by a wide margin over Diron Talbert at #2.

Daryl Grant played with great hustle and energy but was not in the same class as Butz or Talbert.

Cornelius Griffin cannot even be in this discussion...

I'll never forget the beautiful sight of Grant scoring against Dallas in the playoffs. Take that Danny White!

I was at the game. Amazing feeling. Butz all the way.

Someone asked which modern day DT you could compare him to, well it's hard to say. Butz wasn't exactly a sack machine or the most dynamic player. He certainly wasn't flamboyant and celebrated following each play like today's prima donnas. But to me his helmet told the story. Until this very day, and I'm sure the NFL probably uses some special coating or seal, but I've never seen a football helmet so scared and battered like Dave Butz' helmet. It was scary.

If I had to name one player that resemble Dave Butz in terms of style though, no one really jumps out to me.

No brainer...DAVE BUTZ. That dude was a man amongst boys. Totally dominant. I hope Albert Haynesworth is that type of player for the Skins. If so, the Skins defense will be the best in the league.

. . . and his helmut showed that no one battled more intensively at the line of scrimmage than he did. That helmut deserves its own place in the HOF.

Re: Redskins Best Ever Defensive Tackle

I already voted for Butz and think Talbert is the clear number 2. I am not getting the C. Griffin hate going on though. No, he is not in the Butz, Talbert class but he is certainly up there with D. Grant in competition for the 3rd spot. Who else would you put at 4 besides Griffin?

Griff has had his injury problems true enough. But he has been a solid producer for us -- he strikes me as one of those guys who can generally beat his own guy but struggles when doubled. I may be wrong, having not studied the tape, just going on what I think I have seen. If true, he and Haynesworth may be the best tackle tandem we have had since Butz, Grant.
