Re: "The Quarter"

On the play that Williams got hurt late in the 1st quarter, at the time I thought that the refs blew the whistle early. Williiams fumbled the ball as he writhed in pain, yet he was never downed by a defender. Thankfully, the ref on the scene blew the play dead, or Denver would have had the ball deep in Skins territory, already up 10-0. The injury (and seeing Schroeder QB the next series) seemed to break Williams out of his funk, and the rest was a quarter for the ages. No team will EVER amass 350+ yards in a quarter - pre-season, regular season, or post-season. It may have been the most perfect football ever played.

Re: "The Quarter"

Some NFL network or ESPN show a few weeks back had that as the best Super Bowl moment ever.

Also, in that game there is another thing I won't forget which I believe was the turning point.

If you remember, the first time the broncos had the ball they socred a TD. Skins fans were stunned.

Next time Broncos have the ball they are just marching down the field again like we aren't there.

On third down around the 11, Elway calls a qb draw and looks like he's going into the end zone untouched.

From a pile, up reaches the huge paw of #65, DAVE BUTZ and pulls him down from behind.

Denver did get the 3 pts but we held them and it gave us hope. Otherwise, we are down two scores in the first qtr and looking at doom.

Without a doubt, the 2nd qtr was the finest 15 minutes of football I've ever seen, but Dave Butz kept us alive when we needed it.

I always remind people that as amazing as scoring 5 TDs in one quarter sounds, I tell them you have to remember we had to give back the ball after every score. So we would score, give them the ball - the D would hold. Get the ball back and Score again. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

Re: "The Quarter"

Dave Butz might have been the most underrated Redskin in history. The guy was an absolute stone wall against the run. I don't recall the stop on Elway, but holding Denver to a FG at that moment certainly kept the Skins in the game before the fireworks in the 2nd quarter.

that was on an attempted Elway quarterback draw. next play was the FG making the score 10-0.

Re: "The Quarter"

Monk had a clutch 3rd and long catch on along the left sideline which kept us from punting again early in the game. HUGE play.

I love the name NFL films gave that game.

They called it "The Ambush at Super Bowl XXII" or something like that.

Re: "The Quarter"

Also my favorite game. (The 340 is Doug Williams' passing yardage for the game.)

I also remember they announced that the D changed their cleats after Denver got their FG. I had such a strong feeling that it would help the D that I remember it to this day.

In addition, this game was the last great birthday present my father got.

Re: "The Quarter"

I hate Dallas so much that I cannot say that this was my favorite game, as I relish playoff wins over the Cowpies more.

This was, though, the most impressive and amazing Skins game that I have ever seen.
