Dr. Z on Gibbs

I didn't even read the article but I know people will make these sorts of judgments and wisecracks about the Redskins until the team turns it around on the field. When you're winning, any sort of dysfunction tends to get winked at by the media ... when you're losing or mediocre, it's the only thing to talk about. Lucky for us, this ship is turning around and the clowns who pass themselves off as experts will have to find some other shit to stir. Snyder will always receive his pot shots and you never know, Gibbs may too before this is over, but winning breeds respect and we finally have a coach who knows how to win. We've seen the way he builds a team ... next comes winning a bunch of games ... and then we'll start seeing articles about the Bandwagon and such things.

I'm pretty sure on one of Gibb's first interviews with George Michael he said the reason he came back was for Coy. He said he liked to coach, but his primary reason for coming back was his son.

No, seriously, I know Gibbs has said numerous times that Coy was a big reason for him wanting to come back, but I tend to think that Coy may have been the spark that simply re-ignited the fire, so to speak. Whenever I hear him talk about Coy telling him he wanted to try coaching, it sounds to me as if it was the turning point where Gibbs began to think, "Hey maybe that's not such a bad idea after all." His sons were a big reason why he quit coaching to begin with, feeling that it took too much time away from his family. Now that Coy's all grown up, and has expressed his own desire to coach, maybe Joe thought, "Hey, this would be a great way to spend some more time with my son, while doing what I love to do anyway, right?"

So while Coy may have been a major catalyst for Gibbs' change of heart, I find it extremely difficult to believe that Coy is the primary fuel that drives him on a daily basis. We all know what drives Gibbs, and that is the desire to be the best at what he does. The guy may talk like a saint, but his competitive fire burns hotter than hell.

I heard in a interview with Gibb's and he said that he told his son that he wasen't doing this [coming back] for him. it was one of his first interview's. yes coy had a hand in it, but it was his mother who I guess figured it would be best if coy started coaching to do it under one of the best, so she gave her blessing's on joe coming back.

So what if Gibbs coming back is because of his son? Yes, Gibbs could have gotten his son a job on a coaching staff somewhere, but wasn't one of the reasons Gibbs left was to be able to spend more time with his family?

Did this idea ever cross Dr. Z's mind? Gibbs thinking, "Why let some other coaching staff show my son the ropes when I can show him how it is done!!"

I think JC summed things up well.

Coy's desire to get into coaching is what may have initially sparked Gibbs' interest, but it's not the sole reason for his return. Gibbs would never do something half-assed, if he's committing to something he's committing himself 110%.

Making the Skins into winners again is the ultimate challenge for Gibbs. If he can climb that mountain twice, he will surpass his already legendary coaching status.

Thanks guys! I appreciate it! I didn't do much for my Birthday, went out for dinner and a few drinks with a friend. Got a slight buzz going and then I went to bed, had a football game this morning. I plan on doing quite a bit more celebration tonight! Still debating as to where to go, have a few options to party at! I go to the grocery store, buy a bunch of beer, don't get carded.... The usual!

Matty, were you spying on me? I watched every single win during the Spurrier era. For the other 22 hours I worked and had a few drinks.

I think Gibbs is fully commiting himself, he always does. You never want to go into something half ass, give your all. However, I do believe that Coy was a large part in his decesion to return to coaching. Obviously he still has the desire and drive to win another Super Bowl (or two, or three, or four, or...). There's not a damn thing wrong with going back into the coaching world because your son wants to, and I'm glad to see him back in Washington. As much as I love Spurrier, it would be painful to see Gibbs anywhere else. Don't get me wrong, I still wanna see Spurrier at Redskins park, maybe just have Gibbs give him some pointers while Spurrier does O coordinator!
