However right now a lot of our problems stem from the fact that we don't have a Drew Brees type at QB and the running game is inconsistent. If we had one of those then we would be able to be productive offensively but we don't. I know Portis got over 100 yards against the Cheifs but 70% of that yardage was on one play on a drive that didn't even produce points if I recall correctly.

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
I'd thought of this possibility myself. I know, or should I say I believe, Gibbs would not want to coach again at his age. But the one thing he didn't really succeed in was nfl mgmt.
Don't get me wrong, I think Gibbs II was great for this franchise, but he was part of some terrible moves, loyd, arch, trading picks, etc. He got us to the playoffs twice, which is more than we'd seen since he left the first time, but he probably would still love to prove that he could manage a team. |

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
I've been a longtime reader of the forums here and just today joined because I couldn't hold my tongue any longer.
I've been a fan since the 60s and have seen some horrible teams, but this season takes the cake. The Snyder/Cerrato admin is a total joke, not just in Washington but across the league. To respond to this thread, I would say that this would be a positive step. Gibbs may be the only person that the Danny would take a backseat to, just out of pure reverence. But all the talk and speculation about who our new coach should be is a waste of time. We should be speculating on who our new GM will be. Personally, I would like to see Bobby Beathard come back, but I think DS dissed him in some way when he first bought the team. The new GM will be the one to make the coaching, scouting, personnel and team admin decisions (as it should be). Gibbs wouldn't take that role, but he MAY be able to get DS to hire the right guy and to get his nose the hell OUT of football operations completely. Mr. Snyder, if this gets to you at all, Please do the right thing and stick to what your good at. Market the Redskins! Let those you delegate to actually run the football ops do what their good at...and don't ever let the two ends of the spectrum cross again.

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
And another thing, why wait til the end of the season to hire a GM??? Get him in here now to get a head start on next season. It takes time to build a scouting staff and scout players before the draft. Why put it on a short-track by signing someone in January.

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
I hope this isn't true.
Being that Gibbs also trades away draft picks for aging guys I'm not too excited about this. I like the team president approach though. This sounds like a Snyder move to get fans back in his corner but still gives him influence over our roster. He's not a good candidate being that he had involvement in poor front office decisions in the past. He's also way too butt-buddy with Snyder to not have his decisions be affected by Snyder. Bad move but I bet that casual Skins fans are licking it up right now. I'd hate to see Gibbs be Snyder's fall guy.

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
I hope this isn't true. Joe Gibbs is my favorite person in sports and I don't want to see Snyder drag Coach Joe back into this mess. If this is true I see it purely as an attempt by Snyder to calm the fans down by having Gibbs sign off on the next coaching hire.
My other concern is that if this is legitimate and Gibbs does want to lead the franchise then we could end up stuck with Vinny again because Coach Joe didn't fire Vinny 6 years ago when he could have.

And Vinny in any role no matter how insignificant is unaccebtable...You can not sell real change to the fan base with Vinny still there. However, if this is truely a Parcels/Miami type situation where Dan is OUT...Vinny is OUT...and Gibbs hires a GM & a Head coach then I support it.

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
I'm not to sure what to think. As team President only, he would be the guy hiring the GM and I would think he wouldn't have much say at which players we go with. This is the only way that a good head coach or GM would come our way. Joe carries a lot of respect in and out of the NFL. Danny might be able to get a big name or big GM if Joe's a buffer. I can't see Snyder making the same mistakes for another 10 years, although it is possible.
I think as team president alone he'd do well. He can build very good organizations. His second time around had some suspect deals, but as long as we sweep Dallas and Filthy I don't give a damn. Joe should do alright at building up management. JD is basically running JG Racing for him with the organization that he built. All Joe does is show up, wave his hand, talks to people, signs autographs, and gives really long track side prayers.

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
If he were to get the job, I hope that they get rid of Cerrato. I do not want to hear that any personnel decisions were "a Redskins decision". He would probably do well, but who knows? I thought we would have done better when he was coaching than just being the 6th seed every other year.

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
This has run through my mind too, as coach...at least for the remainder of this season...but I figured he's too busy.
![]() I would love to see him as GM if we can't attract any other top-level candidates. However, this is from PFT...so I am not giving it any merit yet.

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
Gibbs does a good job in evaluating good people to run things. He speaks alot about surrounding himself with good people who know there role and gets everybody to contribute for a common goal. I think advising Danny Boy on who to hire as in GM and then advising on head coach and they FO people is the best news I have heard all year. I dont like him chosing players and looking for talent, but I think the idea of rebuilding the top of the organzation is probably Gibbs' greatest strength at this point.

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
I doubt Joe Gibbs would be as involved as Parcells is. I'm thinking he'd be closer to a Joe Banner or Amy Trask or Ted Phillips.
If you don't know who any of those people are, that's because they aren't really known as "franchise runners". But they all basically serve as the president of different football franchises (Eagles, Raiders, Bears). Parcells and Ireland, on the other hand, make business decisions jointly. Really doubt that would be the case here. Plus, didn't he already right the ship here once?
