JR is a mega bust no doubt, but I hope the Raiders don't get their money back. They were the ones that drafted the guy and agreed to his contract. Tough doo-doo.

Re: Raiders Want Their Money Back from Russell

Did anyone see espn's 30 for 30 film "Straight Outta LA" that was directed by Ice Cube? It was really good. An LA councilman said that Al Davis & the Raiders have always let you know that they put their team first, implying that Al Davis is getting what he deserves because he refuses to work w/people, namely the nfl & cities of Oakland & LA.

A sports writer said that Al Davis has played the victim so long that he's become the victim. Essentially saying, if you believe you are a victim you'll become one. After all his legal battles w/the nfl & the cities he's had his team in, he still doesn't have a long-term deal in place for a stadium.

This sounds like Al Davis is again trying to plead injustice, but there's just nothing there. How many teams would like to have $ back from top 10 picks that didn't amount to anything? I just want our draft picks back from when we selected Shuler & Westbrook!

Good luck, Oakland. Your money has already been digested.

Amen to this. From the looks of his physique, it appears that the digestive processes acted on lots of Twinkies and bacon cheeseburgers...

Re: Raiders Want Their Money Back from Russell

That's nature of guaranteed money, it's GUARANTEED. JR was a bust no doubt but he received a deal consistent with what other firsts had received previously and the normal year to year contract increases. I don't know about a rookie cap coming from all this but at least make rookie contracts 3 years from now on. Then teams won't get hemmed up with huge salaries for guys that are not playing well enough to justify those salaries. At least then a team can pay on the scale that exists now but they don't have to make such a huge future investment in the player that has the potential to set them back for multiple seasons. This also presents an argument for teams to lobby for eliminating the dead cap space designation for players who change teams while under contract or leave football with accelerated bonus money still on the books. That money should be able to move to a franchise expense category that does not count against the cap.

Perfect scenario for Russell: Getting signed as a backup lineman project. He's mobile enough to be a pulling guard, plus he will not only be allowed to eat as much as he wants, it will be encouraged. 330 pounds...no big deal.

Yeah it'd be perfect if all it took to play offensive line was to be big. He couldn't get motivated to play QB in front of a rabid NFL fan base for millions of dollars, something tells me being a backup interior lineman for close to vet min won't change that.

Hey, I think a lot of players, and coaches, should be paying money back to the owners if they didn't at least try their best on the field. Even Coach Gibbs should have given Danny some of his salary back because he left (both times) when he saw the talent level drying up. Vinny Cerrato should have given all his money back! Ditto for Zorn.

Maybe the first time he left because of imminent talent deficit but the second time I really think pulling that team through the Sean Taylor tragedy took a lot out of him on personal level. Sean was his first pick with the team for his second go round, Gibbs tried so hard to help Sean turn things around in his life, and see all that work end the way that it did I think coming back for another year would have been too much, I mean to see a career and a life end like that when so much progress had been made has to be disheartening and then to be the guy that a team looks to for guidance after the situation that took a toll....off topic I know but I don't fault Gibbs for leaving the second time and I think he earned his money.

I agree. Joe Gibbs doesn't need to pay back anything. He earned every cent he ever made with the Redskins. The man wasn't perfect but he was the best thing this franchise ever had.
