James update, physical now scheduled for tomorrow.

Redskins Insider

Erasmus James Update

The Skins new DE reported to Redskins Park today but did not take his physical. It's now scheduled for Thursday.

The Redskins are not concerned about his ability to pass the medical tests and are viewing the deal with the Vikings as a completed trade even though James failed his physical with Minnesota. They aren't worried about it, and these physicals are often highly subjective as well with the standards varying by team. If you really want a guy to pass a physical and he has all his limbs then it can pretty much happen. (I know of several teams in recent years that failed current Redskins Rocky McIntosh, Stephon Heyer and Malcom Kelly coming out of college, for instance).

As I noted yesterday, you can't knock this move. James has some upside and yes the ACL is a concern both short and long-term. But for a 7th round pick, why not take a shot? Especially with such an overt need at his position.

It's a 7th rounder. who cares. We gave the pick to ensure we got him, there were 20 teams ahead of us that could of picked him up off the waiver wire. We must not need picks if we are drafting punters in the 6th round. Does anyone know how many punters were taken this year? Only 1. We could of signed an undrafted Punter. So a seventh rounder for a 1st round player is not that big deal, even with his injury history.

I'll maintain my wait and see approach on EJ. But at this point there is nothing lost and nothing gained, yet.

We must not need picks if we are drafting a punter in the 6th round of the draft for Durant Brooks at selection #168?

Why so?

Since he was the only punter picked in this years draft, and we need competition for frost. I'm sure glad we picked what should certainly become the future punter of the Redskins (Maybe this year) and happened to be the #1 punter in the draft.

I say we sell the team and start a wiffleball league. I love wiffleball.

It seems as if people are very high on James. I know he was a 1st round pick, but what makes people think he actually will be something special? (a genuine question)

Had a good rookie season, would have improved if not beset by injury. He's a complete player who plays the run well. He's only 25.

I think that about covers everything nice to say about the guy,

I never watched him play...but I don't think 4 sacks in 15 games is "good". However, he sounds like a good "chance player" if what you say is correct.
Does anyone have a link to his college days, or a compilation of his NFL plays?

Only 9 starts though, almost a sack per two starts...as a rookie. That's pretty much the status quo for a pass rushing prospect. If he starts all 16, you'd like to see 6-7 sacks his rookie year.

Solid sack numbers in limited time, as GTripp mentioned. But more importantly, to play for Blache you need to be pretty strong at the point of attack to hold up against the run. He's pretty good at that. Very physical guy, plays a bit bigger than his listed weight of 265. If he can stay healthy and conditioned, he's got potential to be an every-down DE, as opposed to a pass-rushing specialist.

He's pretty light to fight off the run.
Some of the stuff I have read about this guy indicates his weakness is against the run.

A majority of guys who like to get in to the opposing blocker's pads as his first move also put themselves in very good position against the run, regardless of their size.

Normally, the issue with 265 pound ends is that they feel they can't afford to do this, because once they are engaged, the blocker will just overpower them. So guys like Chris Wilson, Elvis Dumerville, Dwight Freeney, they just try to get a step and beat the tackle around the edge.

That's not really James' game though, so we can trust that he's tougher against the run than his size indicates, and that he's capable at LE.

Re: Updated: Redskins Trade for Vikings DE Erasmus James

i gotta say, i don't know why people are so down on this. he makes 800k this year, 1 mill next year and the skins have ZERO risk or liability if they want to toss him because they think he blinks or some such.

and railing against brooks in the 6th is a REAL stretch. if he had gone in the 4th no one would have been surprised. as a prospect he's WAY above where frost was, and he has a good shot at becoming a top 5 or 10 punter in his career. he was a great value for his potential in the 6th round, and any team would have looked good taking him that late.
