Cam has signed the biggest endorsement deal ever for a rookie to be:

Report: Cam Newton gets lucrative endorsement deal - ESPN

Could this be one more sign that he's destined for greatness?

Yet another reason to avoid Locker like the plague.. As much as I dislike PFT, they are quoting a reliable source..

Baseball could be an option for Jake Locker | ProFootballTalk

I saw that to. Can someone explain the $250,000 signing bonus? I can't imagine the NCAA would allow a player to sign a pro contract for baseball and then turn around and play college football. Plus it's not like he's completely disconnected from the Angels, going so far as to travel to Arizona for workouts with the Angels Minor League affiliates.

Quote:
Angels general manager Tony Reagins said Locker has lived up to his obligations under the contract, which include traveling to Arizona periodically to work out at the team's minor league facility.
Either way I guess this is part of the reason that Locker was comfortable enough to pass up the $40 or $50 million he would have made in the draft was because he had baseball as a fallback option. Obviously the difference in pay is huge for now but the fact that he had options besides football had to be a contributing factor.

Still I wouldn't say it's a reason to avoid Locker. Though I will admit he makes me very nervous as a pro prospect (mainly due to his accuracy issues) he's still good enough to make me jump on the bandwagon should we take him on draft day.

Honestly though if I was talented enough to play both pro baseball and football I would easily choose baseball, despite the fact that my love for football is exponentially higher. Less wear and tear on the body and guaranteed contracts are a much better deal then contracts that are only 25%-35% guaranteed. Not to mention the horror stories about NFL veterans that date back as recently as the Dave Duerson tragedy.

To take a guy 1st overall, who's played one year in a non pro style offense, that was in shotgun 99% of the time, who's favorite play was to just run the ball up the middle is just ridiculous.

The 2011 QB class: They all have flaws but at least one is likely to be selected in the top ten. One or two more will probably be chosen later in the round. There is a slight possibility that all could be passed in round one while teams fill other needs.

jmo\ but, I don't think there is a QB in the 2011 draft worthy of a top ten selection.

Sorry guys, but this guy just told the press he is an icon and you know what that means. Unless this guy is the Lebron James of Qbing, he is doomed to fail,as this is the kindof guy the press, etc love to see take a fall. I think we need to pass on this guy, and not just for the showboating reason. We don't have the weapons for this guy to utilize yet. He might pan out to be a very good QB, but only on a team that has players of decent quality around him. By the time we do that, he might get banged up or just plain tired of DC. I still say we stick to a solid rebuilding the lines plan with the emphasis still on the O line.

Well he's young man but I agree with you, stay away from Cam IMO.

Re: ESPN Say's Newton To Enter Draft

Hearing him calling himself an entertainer and an icon makes me very nervous about the prospect of drafting him. When he says that I'm reminded of Charles Rogers Lamborghini Living. Sure it's great that he's going to work out at the combine, but between his "father's" pay to play scheme and wowing media types at a preview of his workout. Well safe to say I feel like he's exponentially more concerned with his payday then he is having a successful career. Or put another way, I feel like his combine and media workout isn't a competitive thing/being the best player he can be type thing but rather a "if I do this I can increase my draft stock enough to get a big pay day" type motive.

I know I've been supportive of him but I can't stop picturing him having a Vegas post-draft party a la Ryan Leaf after these comments.

It is concerning and may not be a deal breaker, but these things are RED FLAGS in my mind....

This guy sounds awfully full of himself for only playing one season of college ball. Let someone else reach for this guy. I hope we don't.
