Smoot, I think you are correct about making the team. but the announcers spent time talking about who was the suprise cut which they had no idea. Which is why I kept listening. Announcers probably got it wrong.

Ok, I think I actually found it. On ESPN 980 under Cerrato interviews on Sept. 2 he had a 10 min. interview with Sheehan and Sheehan states that Zorn said there would be a suprise cut or two and he asks Cerrato about that and he,Cerrato, said...there could be a suprise.

ESPN 980 Audio Vault - Play Now

It comes at the last min.
Edit: It's actually at the 1:14 mark.

I just don't see Betts getting the axe, not when Zorn said not too long ago he's going to be the 3rd down back. Betts is the more complete back over Mason too.

Yeah we have to keep this in mind. My only concern with Betts being the 3rd down back is that I don't think he's good at getting the 3rd and 3 type of plays. Betts is not the man I would pick to rush the ball in any type of goal line situation or goal line offense needing to get the 1st down to sustain a drive. He failed misserably in that roll. However he is a great blocker for passing downs on 3rd down and great at catching the ball out of the back field. Which if I'm being honest with myself....Mason will not take Betts job right now. but I still think Mason is a better runner then Betts.

The fact that Betts is not reliable at getting short yardage would not be a reason to elevate anyone on the current roster over him; that's because we don't have a good short yardage back on the team.

I hope the Skins can somehow find a good short yardage back and add him to the team.

Yoder replaced by Eddie Williams would be interesting. Yoder is our blocking TE, but he's not much of a blocker.

Ok, Here is Zorn's interview:

ESPN 980 Audio Vault - Play Now

I listened and although Zorn is sometimes hard to listen to or understand with all his evasiveness I think he actually said..."Don't be suprised about some guys getting cut who will be on someone elses roster cause they can play in this league. Just because they don't fit our system doesn't mean they can't play elswhere." or something to that effect. I almost got the feeling he was refering to rookies and that they will get picked up somewhere else but it could mean a vet who has been with the team but has struggled these last 2 yrs I guess.

Redskins have apparently said they won't cut Mason or Colt....not today at least. Cuts won't be announced until tomorrow

That sucks, if they know who they are cutting they should do it today so those players hit the wire early and have a shot of landing elsewhere.

I think that they do it last second so as not to give other teams a heads up on practice squad.

DB, can I ask why you are concerned about these guys having a shot somewhere else. It probably sounds heartless, but for guys who get cut, and the Skins still want to keep, say like Colt/Chase or Alridge/Dorsey/Mason, I would rather they stay near our organization if they are PS eligible, rather than going somewhere else. Even with that though, at this point if an organization has its eyes on a player of ours, I would imagine they would take him regardless of when he is cut.

D.C. Sports Bog - Jason Campbell Really Likes Big Plays

When he was asked which young backs have impressed, Cerrato praised Mason extensively, saying he's been good all over the field, including on special teams, and mentioned no other names. Later still a caller asked if Alridge had a chance, and Cerrato said "we'll see" about five times, while mentioning the numbers game.

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! What is the love for Marcus Mason? He's the slower version of Aldridge.

Everyone has their underdog that they like to root for. Usually its a good player who ends up getting caught in the numbers game. IMO I dont see us keeping a QB on the PS. I like Colt and at the same time i like what i saw of Chase and with teams scrambling to find a backup QB id like to see one of these guys get a shot even if it is elsewhere after we cut him. Same with the RB position.

Well, it appears it's a tactic used by at least one other team.

Steelers make cuts, but don't announce them - NFL - SI.com

I also found this nugget:
"One reason for the secrecy is the Steelers may be trying to slide running back Isaac Redman from the active roster to the practice squad. Redman, an undrafted rookie from Bowie State, was the surprise star of training camp and scored three of the Steelers' five touchdowns rushing during the preseason."

but ... but ... won't all 31 other teams be busy holding their breath and watching the waiver wire to see when Mason is available??

dime a dozen, man... dime a dozen.
