Re: Coronavirus (sports edition) thread
Think of it this way. You have a german shepherd and you hate your mother in law. You get a shirt that belongs to her that she's worn, you train your german shepherd that he should attack anything that smells like that shirt.
Next time she walks through that door, he takes her down and you live a happy life. That's a vaccine. The dog is your lymphatic system, he knows how to fight he just needs to be shown who to fight, how to recognize them, and when. If he's not taught to fight her, she's just going to come into the house and be a bitch and get all up in your business. He has to know she's the enemy. The shirt that smells like your mother in law is the vaccine. It smells like her. It's enough to teach the dog who to fight. Once he knows she's a succubus, he'll kill her on sight, before she moves in and ruins your life.

Re: Coronavirus (sports edition) thread
so, yeah back to sports??
Forgetting the "dumbs" and other name calling that seems to be ok in this thread, I want to say that regardless of how it plays out, right now the team is handling it very well. Could you imagine a BA led front office going through this. There would be rumors, innuendos, name calling - you know like the debating with enemies thread. Instead, you see the team leaders calling for clear thinking, doing the right thing, but still speaking in respectful terms of all the players and teammates. I imagine getting through this, just like getting through RR's cancer last year, will bring the team together tighter. Now, if game checks are lost that certainly would be a separate stressor, but up to this point the team reactions have been excellent. PS there are 2 other threads about Covid where everyone can go and discuss ad nauseum Covid. Can this thread not devolve please. |

Re: Coronavirus (sports edition) thread
Bringing the COVID back to sports discussion (thanks CRed). I'm genuinely curious to know how is asking a player about their hamstring injury or their knee surgery, any different than asking them about about whether they've been vaccinated?
I just find it interested in a sport where news about a players health is part of the business, all of the sudden this health aspect is off limits or taboo. I guess you can say that COVID is non-football related, but it is something that could affect their playing status.

As for team response, I have a meh reaction to that. Every other team is dealing with the same thing, so in theory they're all being brought closer together too. Don't think there will be any kind of intangible or emotional factor here that contributes to our W L record, no more so than any other team has. What might play a factor is number of missed practice/training camp days. Or worse, missed games. With so many guys missing camp because of being on the COVID list, we're at a disadvantage compared to most teams, not an advantage.

As for how the team is handling it compared to the rest of the league, I stand by my statement. I have seen a few coaches outright throw players under the bus - that may play well to fans but players will remember that. RR's approach has been to focus on the team and focus on the unity of the players. I liken it to Gibbs in the strike season. And it builds esprit de corps that will play a role at the end of the season. If the team forfeits multiple games then that will change obviously, but right now RR is being a leader, and guiding not dictating the players to make their own choice and make it with team in mind. I do believe in esprit de corps as you call it, making a difference in bringing locker rooms together. But the Raiders are 95% vaccinated, just to pick one team. They could easily point to how committed their team is to setting aside personal beliefs and preferences about the vaccine, and putting the team before themselves. You could point to how that demonstrates commitment. Every team has one of these things they can point to in these COVID times.

But seriously I'm excited. Hearing that Cosmi's not holding up well in practices against Young and Sweat, and even getting worked over by William Bradley King. That's upsetting to hear but aside from some uneasiness about the tackle spot I'm feeling really good about the roster everywhere else. Fitz is going to be up and down but the point is we were unbelievably awful last year at QB. If we just get capable from Fitz in half his games, and he's awful in the other half, that's still a big improvement from last season. Defense needs to just stay where it was and we'll be in the mix come December. Most of all, we should be very fun to watch. A defense that gets after the QB and an offense with speed and a QB that will chuck it downfield. We're going to have fun, that's for certain. It's a good year to get back to season tickets, for anybody who stepped away from it.

Re: Coronavirus (sports edition) thread
Cosmi should be struggling. He's going up against two top notch pass rushers and he's a rookie. He mostly got by on raw athleticism in college. He's got a lot to learn.

Re: Coronavirus (sports edition) thread
Cosmi couldn't ask for any better on the job training. Going up against two freaking studs.

Re: Coronavirus (sports edition) thread
No doubt. I read an article recently where Rivera was praising Cosmi also. Dude is serious athletic for a tackle. Going against Sweat/Young is crazy every day in practice. Cosmi has serious potential. We could have a stud here.
