Re: Bountygate Punishment for the Saints
Quote:
The NFL position on this has been that this is an ongoing investigation - - and it has been that way since the story on the Saints broke. The league is not likely to "make stuff up"; there is no "stuff that has been made up" about the Saints; Gregg Williams and Sean Payton have pretty much admitted that what the NFL alleged to be the case was in fact the case. And there are so many threads in this story/investigation/whatever that lead to the conclusion that Gregg Williams has done this before in other venues that the NFL HAS to do an investigation to learn whatever it might. Remember, the US Senate is going to hold hearings on this matter and that could put a lot of people under oath while they tell their stories. Imagine Gregg Williams under oath sitting next to all the owners he has worked for and head coaches he has been the DC under and all of them are under oath too. The NFL would not like that to happen... You really should not speculate on what might or might not happen to teams where Gregg Williams had been DC in the past. It is comforting to speculate that the worst that could happen to the Redskins would be a fine but you do not know - - and neither do I - - where an investigation might lead. The odds favor an investigation of the Redskins turning up some kind of "bounty system" but with no links to current management. But might there be links to the owner(s)? I have no idea... I would say the same thing is true of an investgation of the years that Williams was in Tennessee, Jax and Buffalo and what links might be made within those teams to folks still associated with those teams. And remember, the NFL has incentivized Gregg Williams to "spill the beans" on what went on in previous incarnations in the league. The commish's letter to him says that a major factor in the commish deciding whether to lift his indefinite suspension is the degree to which Williams cooparates with and furthers the ongoing investigation. MAYBE you can be worried that Williams might start to "make stuff up". It is less likely that the NFL would find it beneficial to do the same.

Re: Bountygate Punishment for the Saints
I'm worried. If the NFL docks us picks for this, I'll be determined that we are a cursed franchise if we lose our Griffin Pick. IF, thats a big IF, we get fined, I hope its just money, not picks.

The trade with the Rams is signed, sealed and delivered. No chance the NFL blows that up. None.

I see Goodells comment as a shot over the bowel. Another frail attempt to scare DS into dropping the Arbitration. I hope to hell if Goodell does do it DS files his law suit. And I'd hope someone with some balls with the labor relations board would get involved and start their own investigations. What would it take to get a Senator to let Goodell know they might be looking into the CAP punishments. Goodell knows the fans are backing DS. He takes a shot across the bowel and hopes the fans get scared too and stop supporting DS in his filing. Figuring if he threatens our draft pick fans will back off scared. If it comes down to seeing you standing before a committee answering questions and having to give up hundreds of millions of dollars or keep our draft pick at this point I'd rather see you and the other 30 owners squirming having to answer questions and giving up the money. All so everyone realizes you and the league were wrong and were forced to pay for your illegal activity. Maybe with any luck DS can file to have all NFL activity stop or be put on hold until there is a decision by the arbiters. This would also halt the possibility of RG3 going to another team before a decision is made. The league screwed our FA, but they definitely would not screw our draft. |

Re: Bountygate Punishment for the Saints
Why would the NFL do this? Even if it did happen, the culprit responsible has been dealt with. Gregg Williams is in football jail right now serving an indefinite amount of time for his transgressions against the game. Why would the Redskins or Bills have to pay in any way? Plus, that was 2004-2007. We will not get docked any draft picks because of this scandal involving Gregg Williams.

Where the hell would that even come from? The Saints main problem is that they continuously lied to Goddell and covered it up for 3 years.

Re: Bountygate Punishment for the Saints
Despite any concerns some may have (including myself) I believe the NFL is further investigating this issue to see if there are other teams that have recently engage in bounty programs. While the whole cap issues may give us the idea of being paranoid, I just can't see how the NFL can place any penalties on the Redskins organization. Now, let's remember that player suspensions haven't been given out, so this may very well be part of that.

On a semi-related note. I am really curious to see what type of punishments Goodell will have for players. I am thinking the likes of Jonathan Vilma maybe suspended for several games up to possibly a year.
