Re: Some basic answers about the CBA from ESPN
one of the analysts on ESPN said it has happened to the 49ers before and they lost draft picks and memebers of the organization were fined. He said it has happened to the steelers but it was not even close to what happened with the 9ers???

What I was trying to say is that cutting players will leave us over the cap (thought I was pretty clear). The only shot we have is renegotiating deals. The question with redoing the deals is if it is even possible under the current year rules to create enough space to be under, and if so, will enough players "step up". If the Ashburn brain trust HAS a method for doing this and enough players willing to deal, then the question becomes, is it possible to get below the cap enough to raid the about to be depressed FA market. BTW, I think the key to pulling this off actually means making a commitment to Lavar. |

Re: Some basic answers about the CBA from ESPN
Guy, it isn't a matter of either or, it is a matter of a combination of both.
Assume that ESPN is correct that the Skins are currently $14 mil over at this moment (granted, assuming ESPN accuracy on anything is nearly as dangerous as going to a game in Philly). Parting ways with Hall, Tupa, Ramsey, Noble, Bowen, Brown, Farris and Frost gets that number down to about $3-5 mil. Redoing deals with Griffin, Portis, Rabach, Samuels, Springs and Washington puts us about $10-12 mil under. Making a commitment to Lavar would allow for an even better 2K6 number. In a depressed market, $10-15 mill could go a long way. I'm not saying this is what is going to happen, just what is possible. There is a danger that Ashburn is going to be ground zero in salary cap Armageddon. But there is also a possibility that they may be over there manufacturing massive amounts of lemonaid. |

The details of the current CBA restrict the amount of money players can make in coming years to no more than 30% of the previous year. This is the infamous 30% clause. Doing the things you mentioned would work in other years but in this year there is very little to be gained by restructuring. I guess if by restructuring you mean all the players take massive pay cuts and forego already agreed upon bonuses then it could happen the way you say. But realistically there is no way we can get under the cap by 10-12. We have discussed this at very long and arduous length around here lately and it is tiring to have to explain it again. If it was easy as you say then all this talk would not be taking place. |

Just to reiterate the message from the Skins camp: If there is no CBA, the team will have to build through the draft. If there is a CBA, the team can be agressive in free agency. I have heard concern for sure, but not panic out of the guys who know the contracts and the long term plan.
