good pickup. we'd be foolish not to restructure Springs to keep depth or move him to FS

Not so sure SS is willing to restructure.

Players are always willing to "restructure" as that always favors the player. Shawn Springs was unwilling to take a paycut, for obvious reasons.

WRONG! Players are not ALWAYS willing to restructure. That makes NO SENSE.

A simple restructure means the player gets their money up front rather than later on. Why would a player not be willing to do this in your opinion?

I'm willing to restructure, just don't feel I need to take a pay cut. Matty knows my stance on this. I'm sure a deal will be worked to keep me here through 2011.

I get the feeling that Matty may be willing to convert a percentage of your enviable salary into a bonus to keep you happy. With all that extra you should be able to enjoy some of the finer window-service irish cuisine.

Close. I was thinking along the line of a tee shirt to wash his windows!

That should be plenty. Get what ya pay for!

How we just cut you, or a 3 month ban. It's up to you.

ok, let me ask the obvious. can this guy play, or are we too worried about how much money the players are making?

With a grade of 71 and his experience. Macklin is a solid pickup for depth, and they got him bargain priced.

Best of both worlds in my opinion. GOOD MOVE!

So what are our chances of trading Springs now? I find it hard to believe that the Skins aren't persuing that. We've got four guys who can start. Not the greatest in the world but all of them are starting quality on most teams. Four is a lot.

This massive depth build up could just be due to a fear of getting bit in the ass again just like last year.

The tricky thing with Springs is trying to predict the point in time at which Rogers' natural progression and Springs' natural regression will cross paths (assmuning that Rogers is good at all). At that point, keeping Springs on the roster (at least as a corner) doesn't make much sense. So if they get rid of him this year, its in essense a big gamble trying to predict that:

a) Springs' production is about to fall off the map
b) Rogers' production is about to spike
c) a mixture of the two

I wouldn't take that gamble just yet. I would keep Springs and Rogers as the starting corners to get another year of experimental feedback. If Rogers appears to be making progress and Springs appears to be slipping, I'd cut bait with #24 after this season. Cutting him now is just a big gamble, especially since teams in our division could have interest in him.

Yeah I think trading him is a good possibility. Not a lock by any means, but certainly possible.

First, in terms of the cap, keeping Springs on the roster in 2007 would cost us the same amount of cap space as cutting or trading him would. So we could unload him and barely burn any of our approximately $5 million in remaining space. The cap will not prohibit a trade.

But maybe the 'Skins are thinking we need Macklin as insurance. GW probably wants all the cover options he can get his hands on after last year's debacle. We have no idea what Prioleau is going to look like coming back off his knee injury, and GW has previously counted on him as a cover guy. Signing Macklin as a nickel CB could be a strong sign that we want Springs to move to safety.

Either way, it adds depth and flexibility. More guys on the roster who can cover, whether they're playing safety or corner. Maybe enough cover guys to feel comfortable trading Springs. Who knows.
