Re: NFL looking to reduce time between draft picks

I'm not opposed to shortening it, but I think it shouldn't be any longer. I would like it if they moved the first round to Friday and then spread out the rest of the draft over Saturday and Sunday. Either way the coaches have enough time to prepare for the draft so they shouldn't be complaining about a shorter first round.

Re: NFL looking to reduce time between draft picks

It does seem a bit long. But MOST teams don't stay on the clock the FULL amount of allotted time, it's not gonna make a huge difference.

Personally I could care less, it's once a year. No biggie either way!

What do you all think of having the draft begin on Friday night?

Oh, and no offense taken 70Chip

If you start Friday night at 7 in the east and did 10 minutes for the first round, you would be done before 12:30 at the latest. Then they could start with the 2nd round at 8 the next morning (5 minutes) and be done around midnight at the latest. I like the idea.

Re: NFL looking to reduce time between draft picks

Me personally, I like the Sat. start, it would be nice if they started a little bit earlier, like in the am. 10ish. So it did't run into the pm. Just my opinion.

Would not care for a friday start at all.

Re: NFL looking to reduce time between draft picks

I like Saturday but if you say 12:00 start the effin thing at 12. I don't need an hour of pregame and then have to wait another 25 min for the friggin bell to ring. Believe me I love the NFL as much as the next guy it's just they really understand the fanbase that they have. Keep it Saturday and Sunday, if they do Friday night think about when it would end. 32 teams at say 10 mins what I think is a good amount of time to decide on a pick, that's about 5 hours 20 min WORST case senario. So 8:00 would be a good start time and you're looking at the first round ending around 1-1:30AM. Only to start early the next morning. It's too much if you ask me. Saturday and Sunday are good just knowck that time down. Also I think the team with the first pick should have 5 min because HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO CHOOSE? YOU'VE HAD ALL SUMMER LOSER !

Sorry for yelling

Re: NFL looking to reduce time between draft picks

The teams FO's/draft folks have every possible scenario mapped out well before hand. If they didn't, they shouldn't be part of any NFL FO. It( Draft) is way overhyped and totally overplayed in significance. Most of the draftees will not make much of an impact at all with the exception of the teams low on the totem pole so to speak. Half of them are busts after 2 seasons. A fellow poster mentioned Bergman, and in a way ESPN helped create the present day monster with their coverage of this event like it was something of large significance. Using our draft as an example, only Landry and maybe two others will make the team, and even that will be a stretch, with most of them relegated to being practice squad rejects or NFL Europe exiles.

Re: NFL looking to reduce time between draft picks

Let's face it, with the amount of preparation that goes into the draft, teams don't need 15 minutes to sit there and field phone calls for trades that rarely happen anyway. Besides, teams already have a pretty good idea going into a draft of potential trades, I highly doubt that on draft day something comes completely out of the blue. It might happen once in a great while, but generally I think teams already have the framework of deals in place prior to the draft.

I'd love the draft starting in prime time on a Friday night.

A Friday night start would be really tough for us.

I guess it's not obvious for me, why would it be tough, SS?

Well the main issue is contractual obligations we have with other major sports properties for Friday night. Also, contractual commitments with the NFL limit our flexibility. For example, they want the draft on ESPN only, so we can't air the first hour of the draft let's say on ESPN2. Just a lot of logistics and legal roadblocks that would not make this good for us. Plus, the ratings wouldn't be as good.
