Re: May the Schwartz be with you?

If you hire Schwartz and Williams leaves, you at least have some semblance of continuity since you're using the same system. Though you certainly lose Jerry Gray as your secondary coach if Grilliams leaves. But you're still in the end, running a system congruent with the roster we have (and will have for the next three years).

The real kicker will be if Saunders leaves. If Saunders jets, we'll be starting over on offense. Which would TOTALLY kill us. Then again, Saunders makes a lot of coin, so if he's not up for a HC job, he'll probably stay.

Yeah, that's indeed a big issue, as JC was reported in the Post this morning as having expressed fear that the HC change might ultimately trigger a series of changes that could result in him having to learn yet another offensive system. Both Saunders and Williams were hand-picked by Gibbs. Gibbs is now gone, and if Williams doesn't get the job, I think most of us agree that he's gone too. That might make the job less attractive for Saunders, or, alternatively, the exiting of both the HC and D-coordinator might have management thinking of a complete makeover. The Post also indicated yesterday that the HC hiring might have the organization thinking more along the lines of a long-term future. This strikes me as there being a possibility that Danny might actually be entertaining--cover the children's ears--REBUILDING. I know I'll get slammed for even suggesting that the Danny could EVER, or would EVER, consider such a thing. But Danny knows that this team ended the year as cohesive a group as one could be. The extent of the fracture created by Gibbs leaving, he knows, would be dependent on whether there is continuity (i.e., hiring or not hiring Williams). If he doesn't hire Williams, he takes two instrumental members of the leadership team from this tight knit group, and creates the possibility of Saunders leaving. Then he'd be talking about a complete makeover on the team, from both sides of the ball (in terms of new systems). And if he hopefully learned anything from his years here, he knows that new systems simply don't start working overnight. That is why I think there is that slightest of possibilities that, if he's considering not hiring Williams, he might actually consider some very deep changes to the roster and to build up.

Re: May the Schwartz be with you?

If GW doesn't get the job, i'd give it about a 5% chance he'd stay as D coord.

I know nothing about Jim Schwartz at all. Matter of fact i've never even heard of him til now.

Why would you go after apprentice when you can have the mentor though?

Maybe the Danny is orchestrating the hiring of the staff before the HC. Maybe Schwartz will become d coordinator w/GW as head coach. I could live w/that.

Another bio:

Titans Radio: Titans Defensive Coordinator Jim Schwartz

Interesting that he spent time as a scout.

And, obviously, he is not an individual who will satisfy the Rooney Rule.

I can't find anything either except what I already know about the rule which isn't too much.

Re: May the Schwartz be with you?

The Rooney Rule doesn't apply to assistant coaches promoted to being Head Coach, which in this case, would apply to Gregg Williams...

Not so. The assistant has to have a clause in his contract promising him the job, which Williams never had apparently.

That's what I get for quickly browsing what I was reading instead of reading it fully...

The Rooney Rule, named for Steelers owner Dan Rooney, requires teams to interview at least one minority candidate when filling a head coaching position -- or be fined.

Yeah, quotes like that are all over the place. What I was hoping to see was something that the league actually put out like, you know, Artcle II Section 7 "Promoting Diversity" All NFL teams, blah, blah, bah.

I know the CBA is on the net, but I don't know if the leagues by-laws or whatever are. Somebody here should know. That Guy? GTripp? Canuck? Earthquake?

Did more looking: This article seems to indicate that "minority" is the operative term:

ESPN - Thanks to Rooney Rule, doors opened - NFL

Any minority candidate fills the Rooney Rule.
