I would like to agree, but if that were true, why didn't they already lock Barber up to a long term? But since Rosenhaus is his agent, he may be waiting to entertain offers and get his client a big payday.

Re: Chris Canty?

I'd much prefer to STOP overpaying everyone else's free agents, retain our own, and place far more emphasis on college scouting and the draft. Look at the two teams in the Super Bowl and name me even ONE free agent that they have overpayed. Also look at how many of their guys are home grown. Just in the last few years, the Giants have drafted Matias Kiwanuka, Justin Tuck, Barry Cofield, and Osi Umenyiora to bolster an already strong D-line that had Michael Strahan and Fred Robbins. Unless we can find bargain free agents the way the Giants did with Antonio Pierce or the Patriots did with numerous guys such as Welker and Vrabel, I'd just as soon stay out of the high stakes bidding.

I know a lot of us share that sentiment. While I don't want Canty in DC, I think he would be a pretty good & affordable pickup if he were an unrestricted FA. I certainly wouldn't consider him a big name free agent.

Ideally, guys like Canty - decent but not spectacular - are the best value in free agency; they can start immediately but not break the bank. I think that's the prudent way of spending in free agency & is what we did this past offseason signing Smoot & Fletcher. I look forward to seeing a greater commitment to the draft, but they'll always sign a couple of players in free agency.

Decent? Canty is a monster... 6-7, 299. 3-4 D doesn't translate into to big numbers for a DE. And- Canty still had 43 tackles, 30 solo, and 3 1/2 sacks. I don't know if he would be worth a #1 pick... but I wouldn't argue against it. If he wasn't comming off a knee and an eye injury- he would of been drafted in the 1st. And a big run stopping, bull rushing DE is the type the skins need.

I've never thought Canty or Spears were playing that well.

he's good, is he above avg.? probably, but he's certainly not an elite DE. I know in the 3-4 it's more like playing DT in a 4-3 so the sack #s aren't there.

He'll get a big payday, but let JJ pay it. I don't think he's worth a 1st pick.

Canty is a monster in size only. his on field production doesn't match the kind of money he is looking for. ill pass on him

Re: Chris Canty?

I don't know how Canty would translate into the 4-3 either. I don't think there's any reason to take a guy who hasn't proven himself as a 4-3 pass rusher. I watched a lot of Dallas games and I'm not sure exactly what he is, how fast he is, or how he gets off the edge.

Good point... I agree. And, he's from Dallas- which by itself is a mark against him. With that said, on that side we do need a big DE who can stop the run and rush the pass.

And, we need all the draft picks we can get, if it's true we're switching to a 3-4. Ughhhhhh!

I hope he stays w/the cowpokes anyway.
Canty is a beast, seen him play here at Virginia but as mentioned might be a bit too much for us.
