At least Couch was a professional off the field. He has had some decent games, played in the playoffs (I think, it might have been Holcomb). Ryan Leaf was just awful right out the gate and that attitude where you just wanted to "smack" him |

Ryan Leaf is definitely the poster child for bust, closely followed by Heath
After that though I think you can maybe make a case for lumping Mirer, Couch, and Akili Smith together.

That was Holcomb in the playoff game. Personally, I think Couch has more talent than Holcomb but the players tend to rally around Holcomb and Couch's contract hasn't been comensurate with his performance

What about Tony Mandarich? The man was a second overall pick and just sucked. Remember when he wanted to fight Mike Tyson on PPV?

mandarich was a huge bust, but there is not any bigger than ryan leaf.i would argue shuler, and desmond howard were close though even if howard eventually got his game at a higher level.i give credit where it's due though, couch, mirer, and jake plummer are huge busts too.

Couch isnt a bust, cause he's not a terrible qb or anything, hes just not the #1 star he was supposed to be. I relaly think to be a bust you have to be just flat out awful.

Geh, Danny wasn't hurt either! Another thing is, I wouldn't actually do it. Couch was hurt and he did his best for that team. I gotta feel bad for the guy and hope he gets a job somewhere.
Who knows, he might come on late in his career. |

I think I even heard someone on around the horn today say Couch had a career completion percentage of over 60%. plus he never really had much of an o-line or consistent running game to help him out. I think he could have solid years ahead of him under the right coach and in the right system but let's be honest, anyone thinking he was going to be a hall of fame back coming out of college had to be smoking something.

Lol, Johnnyred. Look, if he didn't come out of the closet in San Fancisco, he's not coming out in Cleveland!

You know, it sure sucks that Cleveland passed up Donovan McNabb for Couch, huh?
I would much rather deal with Couch twice a year. |

Beem, it's impossible to tell on draft day. Also, there's a reason McNabb fell. He can't win the big games. Couldn't in college, still can't. McChoke may never make it to the big game with Gibbs back.

I have to believe that Andy Reid will have them in tip top shape ready to challenge for the NFC Championship again. But, they can't stay in top form forever. Their window of opportunity has to be closing. Reid obviously was far and away better than the coaching staff we've had for the past two seasons. He was toying with Spurrier the way my dog plays with stuffed animals -- viciously tears them apart, then casually tosses them aside as though they were nothing. Gibbs will be a much different animal than Spurrier was. Andy Reid will have to work double time for Redskin week this year! |

Gentlemen:
Ryan Leaf was not the #1 pick in the draft; he was #2. Rick Mirer was not the #1 pick in the draft; he was #2. Akili Smith was not the #1 pick in the draft; he was #3. Tony Mandarich was not the #1 pick in the draft; he was #2. Jake Plummer was not the #1 pick in the draft; he was waay down the list. I think he was #5. McNabb did not "drop" on draft day because he went #2 overall and the reason that Cleveland took Couch #1 is that they wanted to have a deal negotiated with Couch and his agent prior to the draft so that there would be no hold-out since Cleveland was an expansion franchise that year. (they did the same with Courtney Brown the next year.) Since Couch was willing to take their deal and McNabb's and Akili Smith's agents were not, the Browns took Couch. Just goes to show that if you take some extraneous standard and apply it to the draft - or to free agency - and it does not deal directly with "who is the best football player?", you get in trouble. Here's an overall #1 pick that was a real gem for his career. Jeff George! Give me a choice between Couch and George and I'll take Couch any day of the week that ends in the letter "Y".
