Re: The Correct Singing Of The National Anthem

It was horrible! Ranked up there with Rosanne Barr's version of the national anthem to me! I love Christina's voice, but what was she thinking? I think the National Anthem's melody is beautiful enough without people trying to put their own stamp on it. Just sing it like it was written!

It's all about entertainment, people need to get over it. Besides, it's already an embarrassment to her and she takes a PR hit, which is not a good thing when you are an artist. There are more important things to worry about.

I haven't even bothered looking to see if she had some technical issues regarding how bad it sounded, because normally that girl can flat out sing. Not a fan of her music, but she's definitely got some pipes. She just went overboard with it for whatever reason.

Re: The Correct Singing Of The National Anthem

Well, the National Anthem to me is more than just entertainment. It means a lot to me and when I hear someone sing it well (without all these crazy runs and changing melodies) then it gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. When someone tries to over sing it the way C.A. did, then it gets annoying. And don't get me wrong, I LOVE Christina's voice. She has an amazing talent, but she did screw the pooch on this one.

While I have never sang the National Anthem in front of a Super Bowl crowd, I have sang the National Anthem in front of a large crowd at baseball games, so I understand the nervousness. But, at the same time, she is a professional, grammy nominated singer and I'm not, so I'm not sure I could believe the nervous in front of a crowd bit.

Unfortunately it is for the NFL. I hear what you are saying and respect it. And maybe organizations like the NFL should be more careful selecting who sings the anthem so it is not over the top like that. I still think it was a mistake, and I feel that Christina is paying for it with the bad PR.

To give the NFL credit I think the NFL NEt work is the only station that actually show the singing of the NA before their games.

Re: The Correct Singing Of The National Anthem

I definitely commend her for coming out and singing it live though! I mean, it isn't a very easy song to sing, especially when it's at an event such as the Super Bowl. I wouldn't necessarily say that the NFL made a mistake in choosing C.A. I really don't know how they go through the process of choosing a singer, but I would think maybe they would want to hear that singer's rendition of it prior to making a decision.

Re: The Correct Singing Of The National Anthem

Did you know the actual national anthem was made by taking the melody from a popular drinking song "To Anacreon in Heaven", and pairing it with the lyrics of Francis Scott Key?

I never knew that either until today. I thought it was an original composition. It's still patriotic obviously, but this blew my mind.

Listen for yourself, it's crazy. It goes literally note for note.

Re: The Correct Singing Of The National Anthem

From your link:
Even in rehearsals, Aguilera gives a magnificent vocal performance. Had she made it through the real thing without the error, her rendition may have gone down with Whitney Houston's 1991 performance as the best in Super Bowl history. Instead, it will be remembered in infamy, all because of a simple mistake.

The people I have heard talking about the NA really did not care she missed a few words they thought the rendition itself sucked. They actually have the nerve to compare it the Whitney Houstons. Some time you just have to wonder who writes this crap.

Re: The Correct Singing Of The National Anthem

Is there a rule somewhere stating how the anthem should be sung? Maybe they should start handing out the anthem handbook before hiring these singers.

Yep, this is equivalent to the equally-as-important "how to fly a flag properly rules". If you screw with them, people will get offended.

These two regulations only apply to Army soldiers, not the general public. The "AR" stands for army regulation. AR 670-1 refers to a soldier's appearance, we don't expect everyone to follow the haircut and mustache guidelines set in this manual.
