Re: Where does D. Hall rate as a CB for the Redskins all time?

I like D Hall, but I would not consider him an all time great. I like what he brings to the table for sure. If we had his playmaking ability combined with the coverage skills of Carlos Rogers, then we would be talking "great".

As it stands now I would rather have the guy who takes chances, picks the ball off and sometimes give up the big play rather than someone who rarely allows a catch, but rarely gets a turnover.

I love the fact that he can swing the momentum in a game, but I don't think that he would be on my "ALL REDSKINS" squad considering the other talented CB's that we have had in our rich history. He may make the team based on his returning ability.

Pro-football-reference.com ranks him 34th among defensive backs in Redskins History by approximate value. They do not separate by corners and safeties. AV does not consider seasons before 1950. Sorry, old timers.

Washington Redskins Career Approximate Value Register - Pro-Football-Reference.com

They rank him ahead of recent players like Ryan Clark, Reed Doughty, Deion Sanders, Walt Harris, and Matt Bowen. So, basically, he's a more accomplished Redskin than those guys.

thanks, that's a nice list. If only we'd kept Champ, he'd be another Skin in the hall. If Rogers stayed a few more years he would be more appreciated in Skins history too.

The Rogers mistake was not extending him in the middle of the 2008 season. By the time our new regime came in, Rogers was nearing his 30s, a mark he passed during the lockout. If we had extended him during his ascension, we'd have had him under contract in 2011, 12, and 13, and wouldn't have had to decide between paying him the obscene number he was asking for, and going in a different direction.

I think BA made the right decision to go younger. But its a non issue had Vinny done the intelligent thing a couple years ago. But he had worked himself into such a bad cap situation, that he didn't know if the money to sign players would be there until they decided to dump Marcus Washington, Jason Taylor, and Shawn Springs.

Re: Where does D. Hall rate as a CB for the Redskins all time?

I like Hall, and I like the picks and fumbles he brings to the table, but he doesn't rank amongst the best in all of Redskins history. I wish we had a really old time presence at this table, someone who could tell us what Dan Sandifer brought to the table because any guy that had 13 picks in a season had to be good, and he also is in a first place tie for picks in a game with 4 as well.

In order to be ranked amongst the best, you need to qualify in several areas. Longevity, health issues, and most importantly, play on the field. I'm forgetting some here, but I think those are the main ones. D.Hall has local ties being from VT obviously, so I'm sure that counts in his favor, but he hasn't been here that long in the grand scheme of things, and he's very inconsistent with his play on the field.

Like I said, I love the fact that he consistently produces turnovers for us, although not as much as say an Ed Reed, Polamalu, or Asante Samuel brings to the table. But he still consistently gives up big plays, as much, if not more, than the turnovers he produces. That's why he doesn't make my list, because his impact on the team is neutralized when you factor in the plays he makes versus the plays he gives up. I don't have a hate boner for the guy like Gtripp does, but let's be serious. I think it worked with him and Rogers because Rogers was a steady presence at the other corner spot. He didn't give up a lot of big plays but he didn't make a lot of big plays either. Now with uncertainty at the other corner spot his mistakes are being magnified. And yes we overpaid for him, he's not worth big money. I think we'll go out and probably seek another upgrade at corner next season.

It must be pointed out that Hall is 50/50 at best. He read the same route Evens burned him. When it's pretty it's pretty, and when it is ugly it's really ugly.
