Re: Rice wants to end his H.O.F career as a backup.
I would have thought Rice would have retired in Oakland though...I mean not AS a Raider, but just that I never pictured Rice being a journeyman player.

Rice should've retired on a high note with the 49ers, now he is tainting his carrer by begging and sending notes to all 32 teams, the Broncos sign him and he has his hopes of earning a backup position. This is his 3rd team.....how sad. He needs to retire and GET A LIFE after football!!! If he doesn't want to leave the NFL then get a job as a coach, front office guy, scout etc etc........I view him now as an NFL homeless panhandler.....My views are scewed a bit because I never liked the Forty Whiners (which I will always view Rice) anyway.............

Re: Rice wants to end his H.O.F career as a backup.
If I remember right the year before (1993) he went to the Jets Art Monk was a free agent and the Redskins let him test the market. He found this insulting but eventually re-signed a one-year deal when no one took him.
Then in 1994 he left for the Jets for less money than what he would have gotten with the Redskins because he was upset at how we was treated the year before Is this accurate? Can someone confirm?

The Broncos sure have made some interesting moves this offseason: Rice, Gerard Warren, Courtney Brown, Ron Dayne and drafting 3 cornerbacks with their first 3 picks. Not to mention Maurice Clarett at the end of the 3rd round

Maybe THEY can get some bad publicity too.
Mmmmm. Publicity.

Re: Rice wants to end his H.O.F career as a backup.
The Rice signing makes sense to me. While the Broncos already have a great veteran WR in Rod Smith, they've got a whole bunch of young, relatively unproven wideouts who could learn a lot about the game from Rice. Besides, Rice signed for a bowl of peanuts and a beer.

Re: Rice wants to end his H.O.F career as a backup.
Rice would have been good here in DC. As a leader his experience would be invaluable. Especially with a young batch of receivers with a lot to learn.
About Clarett, NFL.com had a video of him up and he looked great. Everyone was complimenting him.

Re: Rice wants to end his H.O.F career as a backup.
I don't think Rice's motivation for playing is to mentor young WRs.
He's playing to extend his stats a little more and because in his head he still thinks he's a #1 WR. Otherwise known as yet another great athlete who doesn't know when to hang it up. |

Re: Rice wants to end his H.O.F career as a backup.
I'd kind of like to see Clarrett have a good year. He's in the right system for it...
I know he's a douche, but maybe its one of those stories of someone overcoming adversity... ...and all that BS.

Re: Rice wants to end his H.O.F career as a backup.
TAFKAS:
Your recollection of how Monk came to leave the Skins is how I have heard the story told more than a couple of times. One other "strange" Broncos' move this offseason has to be the acquisition of Todd Sauerbraun after his association with the doctor handing out steroid prescriptions in the Panthers' locker room... Maybe Art Shanhan is having a flashback to the days when he coached the Raiders?

Re: Rice wants to end his H.O.F career as a backup.
Thanks for the confirmation Curmudgeon...
By the way, anyone else find it odd and a bit disconcerting that Rice didn't want to ask Rod Smith for #80 because had so much respect for him, yet he had no problem requesting #80 when he went to the Seahawks? Granted, I understand that Steve Largent has long since retired but Largent deserves a little more respect than that, doesn't he?
