Draft Busts. How do they fool us and the NFL?

The point ,it's not an exact science .I don't think they are fooling anyone or trying to.The draft for lack of a better explanation is luck.Yes you do your homework and try to cut down on mistakes and improve your odds but in the end it comes down to....can these college players adapt to the NFL game which is much different,some can and some can not.

Snake...I think it comes down to teams (scouts, gm, coaches, owner) just become enamored with what a player did in college, no matter the system. RGIII's case is a perfect example...sure he was in that spread offense (who isn't these days) but he lit it up and ran all over people. Couple that with his bright personality and starving for QB team like the Redskins could not resist...especially the owner in our case. I remember plenty of talking heads saying they would not take him that high and that durability was legit concern, but in the end, they took him on the "chance" that he'd be great and overcome those things.

I'm sure there were people inside Redskin Park that probably said not to do that deal. It was the exact same thing with the Browns and Manziel. Jerry Jones had to be talked out of taking the guy by his own son.

I actually think the Browns did the right thing this year. They waited for a QB that they didn't have to reach for. Where the Texans and Bears took too much risk, as did the Rams last year. These teams that are hard up for a QB fall into the same trap that Snyder did.

I think 1st thing you need to do, especially when moving up in the first round...everyone needs to be on the same page within the organization...Coach, GM, OC....RG3 was a Bruce/Dan pick...SHanny and lil shanny jr didn't want him.

Now you hear the samething from the Bears organization...John Fox had no clue about the move up and didn't want trubisky after the Glennon signing.

Apparently the GM Pace believes Trubisky skill set is that of Luck.

Pretty much this. It's the unpredictability of the human factor. Too many variables that you can't account for outside of 40 times and bench press reps.

i think you have to value game tape over measurables.

you have to consider the type of assignments they were asked to carry out.

it's important to understand not just their character but also their football character, do they love the game?

consider level of competition faced.

and their size, like mentioned w rg3, small and frail is not a good thing in the nfl.

drafting for combine superstars or guys that dominated weak competition in a simplistic offense - it's easier to get "fooled".

Hindsight is 20/20 and when you look back at when RG3 was drafted we were desperate for a franchise QB. Decisions made in desperation usually don't end well. Just speaking for myself however, I marvel how every year no matter how much I might say I want to look at things on a rational level, my emotions and dedication to the team always cause me to wear rose colored glasses. I just can't help it.

On the RG3 draft the only silver lining is that the RAMS did nothing with the picks we gave them except to march them out for the coin toss. Jeff Fisher, what a tool. On some level we won that one.

Well said Los Panda! Another thing is knowing how well the players fit their system, which Snyder never considered in the Vinny days. He would swoon over a big name and never considered if they ever played in the coaches style of attack. Adam Archuleta was a well known name but had no experience playing in the defensive schemes Gregg Williams employed. What a shock he didn't replicate the same level he did in his previous team?

The Patriots and Steelers have more hits than misses and The Bengals are very good at drafting players, to the point they eschew free agents(though Mike Brown not wanting to spend money has a lot more to do with that than anything). And though Shanahan was bad at drafting almost every other position he knew what to look for in runningbacks come draft day. He never missed in that position.
