Re: Better days ahead. (Off season part 1 thread)

Cap space is not as abundant for us as people think. Remember, the following need to be considered for resigning (or replacement) this season:

- Cousins
- Knighton
- Gallette
- Will Compton

Plenty of others but they're not cap consequential.

Then next year we'd have to decide whether to resign or replace:

- Garcon
- Perry Riley
- Chris Baker
- Jordan Reed (big $)

So as we think about all of our cap space we have to consider that money needs to be set aside for those guys, and if we're not going pay them, then we have to figure out how we're going to replace them before we consider bringing in an Alex Mack.

It's this kind of long view that leads Scot McCloughan to conclude that the best plan is draft draft draft, and resign your own. Mack is not a fit.

Eff Perry Riley. Lol.
Totally agree with this. We do have some re-signing to do with our cap space, but my God its good to have it.
Especially when we have a full compliment of draft picks and arguably the best GM in the league handling that. (It still feels strange to be able to say that). We have only seen one seasons worth of results from such things, wait until we have 2-5 more contributors after this draft! We are witnessing a team being built the right way for the first time in decades. In the first year we won a division title!
Mack does not fit into the process here, unless like JR said - the price is rite, and unless Mack has a hard on to play for the Skins, it will not be his rite price. Oh well, we will get a starting center out of this draft along with some secondary n dline help. Draft happens to be deep in all our areas of need.

What sort of contract should we expect on Gallette? Last year was a "prove it" year in which he sat out. I honestly have no idea how McLovin will approach this one from the outside looking in.

- Will Compton really cheap he is and exclusive rights free agent

There it is again: PVSD (Post Vinny Stress Disorder)! You've got to try to get over the horrible experience of Dan Snyder and his lackey Vinny running personnel. We've got professionals doing that now. You can learn to trust if you try. Scot is not going to do anything stupid in the personnel arena.

If Mack were good with a two year deal, then sure. And yeah, that would not qualify as Albert dumb (great phrase).

But I don't think Mack would be good with a two year deal. Nor should he be. At the price he'd command (a 4+ year deal worth plenty), it wouldn't be Albert dumb, but it could limit our ability to fill gaps with 2nd tier free agents in 2017 or 2018.

If you keep it to a short deal then fine, but I don't like our chances there.

And keep in mind, while I get your point that Cousins's deal would have a smaller cap hit in the early seasons, it would get exponentially larger in the later seasons.

Let's say he gets 5 years $87.5M ($17.5M per season on avg). Cap hit might be only $12M this year, but could be upwards of $20M by 2019. Have to allow for that to happen in your planning.

I have no problem sniffing on Mack for a short term deal but I don't like getting anybody under contract for any significant amount of money for any year when they'll be 30 or older.

Not a fan of the Mack idea in general. Decent centers can be drafted in the mid rounds. Without having done one lick of research though I'd still believe we could get an upgrade at the position via that route in round 3-4.

well, at that point, you might be talking about a decent replacement for the 2017 season.

NFL Events: Combine Player Profiles - Malik Jackson

The Redskins need a 5th rounder like ^^^^^^^^^ or sign him as a free agent

Warning! PFF article below, lol

https://www.profootballfocus.com/blo...s-this-season/

11. Washington Redskins (12th)

Pass-blocking rank: 13th

Run-blocking rank: 15th

Penalties rank: 12th

Stud: Maybe not his best season, but still a lot better than most. Trent Williams showed why he got the new deal.

Dud: After an impressive enough run, it was surprising to see Kory Lichtensteiger struggle so much before he was put on the shelf injured.

Summary: Washington is reaping the rewards of some good drafting. Trent Williams is a lynchpin on the line, but the pleasant surprise is Morgan Moses looking like a longtime starter, while rookie first-rounder Brandon Scherff finished the year incredibly strong. Heading in the right direction.

Re: Better days ahead. (Off season part 1 thread)

Eagles signed Zach Ertz today to a 5-year $42.5M extension with $20M guaranteed. So that's an average of $8.5M per year.

Ertz finished with 75 receptions for 853 yards, which rank 6th and 7th respectively amongst tight ends this year.

This is pertinent because Reed will be a free agent in 2017. Have to figure Reed deserves $10M per year. He's definitely better than Ertz.

Reed needs to stay healthy for a full season before he gets $$$$$$$

His price will only go up from here. I'd look to sign him this year.
