I agree 100% with your post but there is still the contract dilemma. If the Skins are concerned about Kirk's Red Zone play and they wait yet another year to see if that improves prior to seriously trying to sign him long-term what would that contract look like, how much would it adversely affect re-signing other players, and would Kirk even want to be here after all that has transpired? All of those questions are still unanswered.

Depending on what, if anything, the Skins still want to see from Kirk before they make an honest attempt to sign him LT, they may never see it. Yet that doesn't necessarily mean he wouldn't be a good choice to be The Man at QB for them. It is one thing to be risk adverse to a reasonable degree and another to be paralyzed by indecision. I'm beginning to think that Skins management is afflicted by the latter.

Agreed.

Even if we don't improve in the redzone (and I hardly see how we could NOT improve), with a better defense we are a playoffs team...

I want them to sign him, and my guts say it will happen just before the deadline.

The only thing worrying me is: do they want another year to see what KC's capable of without Sean McVay?...

Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag

If it is not an 11th hour deal on July 14th, I think they are content to allow KC to play under tag again this season. They might tag him again next season, but I doubt he will play under that tag. Chances are if they have to tag him that third time, he will be traded before that tag takes affect. Can't see Bruce Allen paying 32m for one year. But I also cannot see him letting KC walk without anything to show in return.

Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag

Oh yes yes yes

"Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Allen and Cousins’ agent Mike McCartney had their first face-to-face meeting about the contract for the first time in two years at last month’s league meetings. They have since met a second time, which is part of an “improved, encouraging tone” that has created hope that a deal could get done by the deadline or after the 2017 season if things don’t move quite that quickly."

I've kept hope all along, firm believer that the deadline is going to shake things up, but this is a really good sign.

Of course if you're 100% sure a deal will not happen, you could see that as a sign each part is just trying not to look like the side who made a deal impossible to be done.

But I don't see why KC wouldn't want to win millions of dollars playing on a team he's been doing great in (if they offer him a proper deal) and I don't see why the Redskins wouldn't want to sign their first decent QB in forever to a LTD rather than paying him even more for a potentiel 3rd tag...

Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag

Im glad to read that talks have resumed and that Dan Snyder has now personally expressed to Cousins's side that he wants Kirk to be his long-term QB. That should help a lot.

People here are a lot more Cousins friendly than the commentators on ESPN. Its like Seinfeld bizarro world over there.

Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag

It is in the best interest of the team to get a deal done sooner than later and not let KC get past July 15th yet again.

When I look at QBs that are getting deals worked before the season starts. Guys like Derek Carr and Matthew Stafford......there is a market barometer that will be set.
The deal Carr signs will set the 'barometer' for franchise QBs and it is going to be HUGE. I'll bet he gets in the ball park of 55-60 million guaranteed

If the front office is smart, they will get KCs deal done before any other QB signs an extension.

If Cousins is smart, he will wait to see what Carr gets before he moves forward.

Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag

JLC of cbssports.com on the odds of Kirk Cousins signing a LTD before the deadline:

"Odds: 80 percent

The sides have come too far and been through too much not to see this through. For as much was made about faux trade demands and how Cousins allegedly only wanted to play for the 49ers or whatever, the odds have always been strongest that he re-signed with the Redskins. Cousins was certainly not thrilled about being tagged again, but that's the business, and he's nothing if not pragmatic.

A year ago these sides were playing footsie, with no chance of a deal really getting done and owner Dan Snyder and team president Bruce Allen wanting to see Cousins prove it on the field for another season. He's done that now, and they aren't going to be picking high enough to land a top QB next year and they can't try to make another RG3-type trade to get one and franchising Cousins for a third straight year is silly and shortsighted as well. It's now or never for the Redskins to lock up Cousins.

This is the time to make something happen and Allen knows that and he is motivated to make the quarterback a known and fixed cost for the owner. Letting Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson walk was a nod to that, and the Redskins believe Cousins can help further develop young receivers. He's become a leader and a fixture at a position of perpetual angst for Snyder, and this team knows what it's like not to have a functional, winning passer.

And they can't go back to the abyss. For as much as Cousins can reasonably talk about $25M a year, he and his representatives are smart, savvy people, and if it ends up being $23M a year and four seasons are in essence guaranteed by the salary structure, that's a major win for the former fourth round pick. I don't see this falling apart. There's just too much at stake for both sides."

80% of the time NFL contracts get signed on time 100% of the time.

Great find, KI Skins Fan. Thanks for posting.

This article actually makes a lot of sense w/o the hype and nonsense of many other writers. The fact that both sides really benefit the most by getting a long term deal done and how far they have come signals that it most likely does get done.

At this point, I'm past the arguing about whether he 'deserves' it. Like it or not, KC is by FAR our best option going forward. Let's get this done and focus on the upcoming season.
