If Shanahan shares the same opinion regarding who is the better player, of course.

If he doesn't see it that way, you're assuming it's a sham QB battle?

Plus the question of 'best player' is vague. Best player in Week One or best player for the 2011 season, because those are probably different answers. The better QB to start 9 days from now is probably Grossman. However, the better QB for the team as the season evolves is probably Beck because he has a higher upside, more for defenses to consider with his mobility and will only develop further with time and experience.

That's why my opinion is he will go with Beck because it will not only frame 2011 but decisions beyond. Grossman's track record is already established. He's Good Rex-Bad Rex, 275, 2 TD-0 INT one week, 137, 0 TD-3 INT and a fumble the next. That will drive Shanny crazy over 16 weeks.

How does Grossman prove "best player" both played very close in terms of qb rating (not sure where Beck's ended up after yesterday) and Beck fits the offensive scheme better than Grossman does.

Personally, I think it is a push as to the "best player" so then you add in intangibles and it gets even muddier.

I don't see the choice proving or disproving the "new culture"

But at least we have a new qb argument that can rage on since JC is gone. yay

Re: Who do you want to start at QB?

^^ Beck had a bad night and that is worrisome. I don't think either guy, however, clearly outplayed the other. Grossman looked less than stellar himself a few times this preseason. I have no doubt that, if Grossman had clearly beaten Beck, Grossman is the starter. Unlike you, I just don't see Grossman as the clearly "better player" right now.

Sorry, I don't see a "sham QB battle" here. Sure, Shanny likes Beck and it really seems to be his job to lose - but Grossman didn't really do enough to show any clear advantage over Beck. He too was inconsistent, made bad decisions, etc. They are pretty much neck and neck and in this case, tie goes to Beck. If I'm on the team and Beck is named starter, I'm good with that; if it's Grossman, I'm good with that also. Bottom line, we've seen Grossman over the course of a season - he's simply not a world beater. He's good to have around and to be able step in if Beck can't translate the things he [Beck] has done well in preseason into game day during regular season.

As for the new culture, every report I have read says the players feel like Shanahan gives every player a fair shot. I don't remember the report, but I do remember it saying that even players who lost competitions felt Shanny gave them a fair shot to take a spot.

Lmao!! Yeah and preparing for both of these studs should cause mass confusion on the G-men defense. Looks like apples to apples to me. That tricky Shanahan!!! There he goes again!!

Giants have had our number recently, but I don't think they're invincible. I like our chances.

'Bout time for a Week One prediction thread, isn't it?

Yea the Giants have had our number and its more than recently. Cannot remember the last time we beat the Giants. They have owned us at least the last 4 or 5 games in a row.

Stretch play right. Stretch play left. Play action bootleg.
There is no uncertainty at this level of football.
Our coaches and the opposing coaches have seen everything.
They are not re-inventing the wheel.
Not naming a starter until the last minute has little to do about trickery or game planning. More to do about the fairly equal but different types of Qb's. It is a position competition until the last play in preseason.

Re: Who do you want to start at QB?

We are not a Sb contender. Give the starting position to Beck and lets see what he does. If he fails you can fall back on a veteran. If you start Grossman and he fails, you are putting in an unknown. I would start Beck. We have nothing to lose.

This. Grossman is a known commodity, Beck is not. We know what we are getting with Grossman, and it's extremely pedestrian. Beck at the same time, is more athletic, and seems to have a higher ceiling. I say give Beck a chance the first four games. If he falls on his face, we have Rex to fall back on..

Re: Who do you want to start at QB?

Like I said in the other thread.. Beck has only started 4 games for the NFL and it was for a 0-9 team. For people to think he's the next coming of Tom Brady and is going to go 20-25 for 250 every game is kinda crazy...

When Beck starts this year he will have games like this, lets just hope our running game is on point and our defense plays the way they did tonight to keep us in games

Re: Who do you want to start at QB?

As I was watching the game I was thinking that it was a foreshadowing of a frustrating year to come. Today though I thought back to some preseason games when it looked to many of us like a player was due to get cut, only to see him rise up the depth chart later in the year.

Coaches will see things we can't, and also there's a built-in patience factor w/Beck. If they go w/him they will likely expect some really terrible decisions at times, like we saw last night. With time though, if they are behind him & believe he will improve, he'll be given every opportunity. We already know what we have in Rex, as many others have pointed out. So I believe we'll see Beck in week 1 & I'm happy w/that.

Re: Who do you want to start at QB?

Fellas, fellas, face it we are razor thin at QB this season. Anybody thinking Beck is going to be a lucky pickup at this point is simply delusional. Our entire season depends on Rex and our offensive line staying healthy. Neither QB has shown anything to make me feel we are a playoff contender or even better than #3 in the NFC East, which is a shame since we are stacked with young talent. You want a blunt, honest assesment about Beck, just go to NFL.com fantasy and see what they have written about his performance last night.

Thanks for the insight Coach.

I find this comment about our QB situation quite funny coming from a guy with the screen name of Gus Frerotte. Irony.

A First Course in Data Analysis is what he needs.
