I think losing them creates a hole we cant currently fill. We can hope the players we acquire via draft/FA are as good or better but i would rather add to them as opposed trying to replace their production. |

I am sure I would not keep Hatcher or Knighton. You can save about 10 million dollars if they retire/leave. The draft is very deep at defensive line. And they could sign a free agent NT that is not 50lbs overweight .

I really like Hatcher, but he is too old. The "want to" is still there but at his age and with his injury history, he can't recover from the beating he takes in a single week. He noticeably wears down over a season. Hatcher has an 8.7m cap hit next year and a 4.2m cap savings if cut. His body isn't going to be able to recover any better being another year older. We need to cut ties and spend the money on youth. Knighton was out of shape the entire season. He couldn't stay in for 2 plays in a row and be 100% effective. His play did pick up toward the last 3 or 4 games but he was a non-factor most of the year. We shouldn't extend a guy who stayed so out of shape in his "prove it" year. Being 50 pounds overweight is really about self control. He would have been so much better hovering around the 350 mark. The performance through 2015 didn't warrant bringing him back at anywhere near his 4m contract. For the folk(s) that want to bring them back, what kind of contract numbers are you talking about?

There are a lot of talented players on that list. I could envision the Skins picking up one of them on a cap-friendly short term contract. If they do, I'd prefer someone who also plays ST.

Re: Better days ahead. (Off season part 1 thread)
The Bears have informed Matt Forte that they will not be offering him a contract. Some NFL GM's have said they think his next contract will be in the $4MM/Yr. range. If he can be signed to a cap-friendly contract, I think he might be a very good fit for the Skins. I would expect him to share the workload with Jones.

I like Forte, I just don't see him coming here. RB is just not a money spot any more. If we were one RB away, yes, I would be open to spending some cap space for him. Right now, better to draft and develop a RB who fits.

How do you replace the holes created by letting your best run stopper and best pass rushing DL walk? Seems like digging a hole, only to turn around and have to fill a hole. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using Tapatalk |

With Knighton, the hole is dug b/c he is a free agent. Just a matter if we bring him or someone else back.

Knighton's impact, or lack thereof, doesn't really show up in the stat sheet. It's more of an eyeball test. So I guess his performance is in the eye of the evaluator, kind of like PFF or Cooley's film breakdown. Knighton won't be back except on the cheap. Too fat, too out of shape, and largely ineffective with the occasional flash in the pan. The best pass rushing D lineman was Big Swaggy Chris Baker, and it wasn't even close. Washington Redskins 2015 Statistics - Team and Player Stats - ESPN Jason Hatcher NFL Football Statistics | Pro-Football-Reference.com Chris Baker NFL Football Statistics | Pro-Football-Reference.com Losing Hatcher with his cap number and not resigning Knighton at 4m isn't going to hurt us. I predict neither will be here next year.

I have a hard time seeing Murphy as a DE in the base front....in a 4 man line?Maybe, but I can't see him bulking up enough to be a 34 base DE. Quote:
Now maybe overall he ranks positional needs but I don't think he uses positional need rankings to guide his drafting in the 1st round or any round really. I think he takes the BPA. But on that note if I had grade the defensive units........ CB=D S=D ILB=D DL=C+ (would be a B if they weren't so old) OLB=B |

Re: Better days ahead. (Off season part 1 thread)
How different will the Redskins' D-line look in 2016? | CSN Mid-Atlantic
Good article here...look at the part about the winning streak and how the dline played down the stretch. Basically they were key. To your question, my guess is if either is back it would be pot roast. Hatcher probably gonna retire.
