Re: Anyone bothered that McNabb STILL has no new contract??

I say at this point in the season, if Shanahan really is grading him per se, then McNabb has really only played "well" in 2 games, hardly enough to merit a contract extension or a big-money deal.

Re: Anyone bothered that McNabb STILL has no new contract??

I think some are being a little harsh on McNabb. So he is not lighting it up. He is not losing games either. Give him time in this system and let our offensive line develop. The Shanahan's are also learning what works best for our players and they also need more time to get comfortable. It is a two way street. People seem to forget we were a 4-12 team last year and we were embarrassingly awful.
We have come a long way in a short time. Sign McNabb for continuity sake. Then we develop a young QB for the future.
I think the impatient fans bitching about McNabb come from the old/former Dan Snyder school of football where we used to give up on a McNabb and signed a pricey FA instead. Then we are back to a new QB learning our system...again. Patience please. Lets build a team in a 2 to 3 years, instead of one offseason.

Agree with you completely! We have got to learn to be somewhat patient and know that not everything is going to be turned around in one year. Snyder seems to be getting it, now we need to.

The only reason we did not loose the game yesterday is because Hall had 4 ints. Cannot count on him to make 4 ints. every game. McNabb gave them 7 right away. We did not forget last year but a change in QB was not our only move and we do have new coaches. My problem with McNabb is the easy stuff he keeps throwing into the ground.

McNabb and Cutelr were not the only good Qb's to have a bad game last Sunday. A certain Superbowl MVP Drew Brees threw FOUR interceptions against CLEVELAND! HA! F-ing Cleveland.
Should New Orleans look to dump Mr. Brees? No.
It is tough to be good every week in the NFL. That all I was trying to say.
McNabb is a solid NFL QB. Not the best, but certainly not the worst. I am fine with him. I like his leadership and ability to bring the players together. His teammates respect him. I think you Fantasy football types want us to throw the ball every down are not happy. Just win baby!

Brees has won a SB, Mc5 hasn't. Not a good comparison.

That's a weak response. Just because Brees has a SB ring and McNabb doesn't doesn't mean that you can't compare the performances of both yesterday.

I think he came pretty close to losing that game for us on Sunday. He was out 'tarded by Cutler, but except for the most exquisitely timed delay of game, he almost mind ****ed us into a pick six.

I forgot about that pick he threw.

Re: Anyone bothered that McNabb STILL has no new contract??

If the Skins were to sign McNabb to a new contract this afternoon, they would owe him a tidy sum as a signing bonus. Just for fun, let's say it's $10M because that is a round number.

There is a possibility that there will not be a season next year - - or if there is one it might be an "abbreviated season" that begins in mid to late October. Just for fun, let's say the season starts in mid-October.

When the next season starts, there will be at least some new wrinkles in the salary cap rules because there will be a new CBA. Just for fun, let's say one of the changes is that teams can still pro-rate signing bonuses over the life of the contract BUT there is also a limitation on the total amount of signing bonus money and roster bonus money that can be spent in any single football year- - and that amount is $40M. [That kind of limitation is one of the proposals on the table at the moment. I don't think it will make it into the final agreement but you never know...]

Now, with that kind of uncertainty why would the Skins want to hand McNabb a contract today instead of waiting to see which way the wind is blowing in the contract talks that will start for real in Feb 2011.? Why would Danny Boy want that putative $10M in McNabb's "bank account" instead of his for the next few months?

If the Skins sign McNabb to a new deal this season, you can be certain that Mike Shanahan is 200% sure that Donovan McNabb is the answer as the Skins' QB for at least the next 3 seasons - - because it will take 3 seasons to amortize enough of the signing bonus it will actually take to get a deal with McNabb in order to avoid a "cap collapse" down the road.

And Mike Shanahan is not going to deal with any "cap collapses"...

Interesting post.

It pretty much comes down to the risk of

1) What kind of play can we expect from Donovan McNabb over the next 3 years

2) Is there a viable substitute

We've got such a bad history of QB's here... it makes you want to lock up McNabb while we can.

Brings forth the other question. Is it too soon to start grooming the QB of the future next season?

I really want McNabb to work out, but he is looking like JC out there.

If it were not for our D, this is an 0-7 or 1-6 team at best.

Nobody is perfect. Mcnabb will have an occasional bad game or two or three until all the pieces come together for the Redskins offense and coaching staff. Same with our defense. Our coaches are just now stariting to let AH play. Wow,what a revelation on their part.

A fair contract, yes. A blockbuster one, no. I wouldn't be devestated if he wasn't resigned though. I wonder how Grossman would play in this offense, on this team.

They will get it done and he will be here for awhile. Not worried about it.
