1) Those riders are supposed to be on the shoulder so they are correct.

2) Bike paths are for casual riders, not the ones shown in your picture.

3) Spandex is worn to prevent chaffing and keep them dry. Has nothing to do with "Lance Armstrong" wannabes.
Yes, I DID just say that.: Why Bicyclists wear spandex

4) Bicycles aren't generally allowed on sidewalks, that's where pedestrians walk.

5) There are different types of bike riders: cruisers/casual cyclist, mountain cyclists, road cyclists, and . I fall in the first category.

Really, stop being a douche bag over cyclists. Road cyclists normally travel very long distances which cannot be done on a bike path, and they normally travel at a faster rate than you can go on a bike path due to other riders. If you got off your lazy ass and rode one, you'd understand where we are coming from. Oh, and you yelling out of your window like a retarded inbred. Guess what? THEY CANT HEAR YOU!!

Fat Cyclist » Blog Archive » Ask a Cyclist

Road cyclists need to be on the open highway to avoid the stop/starting routine like riding around the block or being on a bike path with other bike riders. They need to open space because they generally are moving between 15-25mph. They ride in groups for slip streaming and will alternate leading the pack.

What riders fear most are asshats that like to play with their phones while driving. Much like the guy below. It's one of the main reasons I will never ever be a road cyclist. How many deaths have come about a bad cyclist? Probably none except their own. How many deaths have come from bad drivers that don't concentrate while driving? Probably more than DUIs.

Show some common courtesy for riders. Most of them know what they are doing and are abiding by laws. If you see some not following road protocol or ignoring stop signs/cross walks/stop lights, then chances are they are new and have no idea what they are doing. It's scary enough being out there on the road with so many idiots, so don't make things worse on them.

So continue being defiant and not moving your truck because you are annoyed with a sport you have no clue on, but if you ever hit one, I would suggest hiring a very good lawyer because your ass is about to be sued big time.

I apologize for the above assholish (I like this word) behavior, but sometimes is must be done.

Sincerely,

The cycling community
Well someone is on their high horse (or bike in this case).

For me, cyclists suck because the vast majority (at least here in the DC area) have ZERO desire to follow the rules of the road like cars have do, yet they want all the respect on the road that cars get. No sir.

Also, if cyclists are riding in a group single-file on the right side of the right lane, cool. Fine with me. I'll just slide by. It's when a troop of these goofballs in their spandex are spread out 4 wide in a lane of traffic and no one can pass. Guess what? I'll be laying on the horn until you move. I've done it before, I'll do it again. They always end up getting out of the way.

Don't get me wrong, I don't go out looking for trouble with cyclists. Just the contrary. I'm into fitness and I respect the exercise and hard work they are putting in. But if you want to share the road, then do it respectfully. Stop at stop signs and red lights. Be mindful of cars needing to pass because you're moving so much slower. Use mirrors and hand signals. This doesn't happen at all around here. Take one ride down Beach Drive in MoCo on a sunny day and you'll immediately see exactly what I mean.

So yeah, until that changes, eff cyclists (most of 'em anyway- SS gets a pass because, well, he's SS).

You're mistaking road riders with city commuters.

This I have to disagree with. Most dont follow the laws. Ive read bicyclist blogs, researched the laws a year ago . . your community (atleast the blogs I read) recognize that they as a whole have a problem with not following the laws of the road and they contribute to the hate relationship with motor vehicles and bicyclists sharing the pavement.

Exactly. To a man, cyclists will try to tell you they "always follow the rules" blah blah blah. Yeah well, take a ride through Rock Creek Park, Beach Drive, or any other cycling hot-spot in the DC area and you'll see just how douchy all of these yahoos are.

i can somewhat understand the bike pants, although i personally would wear shorts over them, like any normal person would do. as for the shirts are all road cyclist like andrew bernard and have sensitive nipples or what

Re: Idiot bicyclists

In Md if there is a bike path, bicyclists by law are supposed to use it, if there is no bike path they are supposed to move as far over to the shoulder as possible.

I also get annoyed with cyclists who want to be treated like another vehicle on the road taking up a lane only to have them blow through a stop light or make a left on red.

Ive just grown to accept it as much as I can. Its alot like motorcycle safety awareness week. Your saying car drivers have to be more aware of the pack of aholes on rice cookers weaving in and out of rush hour traffic at 90 mph?

Re: Idiot bicyclists

Probably already said but I really don't mind them riding if there is a designated riding lane on the road. Usually thats wide enough for the cyclist. However what really irritates me are the nimrods who think it's no big deal to ride on a two lane road with no cycle lane. In other words they are taking their riding on the roadways and honestly here in VA the rule is they either keep up with the speed of traffic or they could be ticketed due to hindering traffic.

They want to ride, go ride in a community or park or something why take up the road and cause traffic to back up cause they can't get around you safely?

I'm going to go on a limb and say that doesn't apply to cyclists. Sometimes they are forced to go on a two lane road. It's just the way it is my man.

I think you need to read my rant clarifying cyclists. Casual/Exercise cyclists can do the park/community thing, road cyclists cannot. You can't ride 20-30 miles in a park while trying to maintain speeds of 15-25 mph. Not going to happen. Road cyclists need the open roadway to achieve those goals when riding.

Good, you can find that in a community which has speed limits of 25 mph. In no way shape and form should you be on an old country road thats 45mph doing 25.... or less up hill.

You really aren't practical in your idea. You are talking about cycling in inner city with those speed limits. Cyclist can't stop/start for lights every block. It would defeat the purpose.

Cyclist speed has nothing to do with the actual speed limit.

I'll concede that I thought there was a law in regards to bicycles having to be able to do the speed limit. There is not. Atleast not for bicycles.

However, you said it would be unpractical for bicyclist to ride in parks or communities becuase they need to be able to ride 15 to 25 mph and it would be difficult. I'll again agree it might be difficult in some parks because some parks are small, but most communities are already set for 25 mph. Plus I doubt very seriously a cop will pull you over because you were bicycling at 35 mph in a community. But it's rediculous to find a bicyclist on an old country road riding 25 to 30 mph on a 45 mph road. With hills and curves on top of it. Many of times I get cars in the opposite direction flashing their lights because just over a rise or hill there is a bicyclist, or just around a curve there is a bicyclist.

To go along with it a bicyclist on a two lane road during rush hour traffic. You can't get around for fear the on coming vehicle will hit you so your stuck with cars all lined up behind waiting for a good opportunity to get around the cyclist.

Look, you want to be a tour de france rider good for you but find a good place and safe place to cycle. I'm not talking the cyclist who runs erands through NYC. I'm talking about the nit wits on old country two lane roads. But even the cyclist who are in the city need to follow the rules of the road, ie; traffic lights.

I mean look, I too don't much care for it when cyclists (or anyone) openly disobey the rules of the road, but honestly-up here at least-I really don't see that. For the most part, we/they aren't trying to get in anyone's way at all. You think it's fun to ride a bike with a truck barreling down on you?

Furthermore, the picture in the original post basically sucks. It's two cyclists not in anyone's way on the shoulder of the road. Maybe it's nitpicking on my part, but that's the visual evidence presented to start this thread as to why cyclists are idiots...and really it shows nothing.

Yeah, for those of us on my side of the argument, that picture certainly doesn't help. That's probably the most generous bike lane I've ever seen, and both riders are well within the lines. Definitely a fail of an example.

maybe it's just me because i am on 123 everyday all day, but if you are telling me that these two douches aren't making a dumb decision by riding side by side less than two feet away from a road where the speed limit is 55 and people do 65 to 70, you have to be kidding me. i think it's the fact that it is a still picture and you have no realization that the speed i'm traveling is over 50mph. if one of them hits a rock or some debris from an old accident and veers to the left a foot they would be dead, same if someone is doing their makeup on the way to work, ijust seems like a stupid risk to me.

the part that kills me is there is a path, not a side walk, but a bike path just the same as the w o&d trail, about 15 feet off the road away from cars traveling at 65mph.

i don't know, maybe i'm the a-hole here won't be the first time and damn sure not the last

I agree with you and don't know why the OP was upset. The cyclist were clearly not in the road way or bothering him other then possibly their clothing?

Wait till he's on an old country road and finds one or two of them peddling away at a snale's pace.

Smoot, I can understand how one would feel about a dump truck or tractor trailor barreling down on you if you are the bicyclist but.... they don't have to be there. They can go to different developements and ride all day with out one worry of a dump truck or hopefully tractor trailor possibly hitting them but no they would prefer to ride in the road way.

Bicycles are allowed on the road way as long as they can keep up with the speed limit and obey traffic laws. Unfortunatly most don't. They get on 2 lane country roads with speed limits of 45 mph. They get on 4-6 lane roads on a busy Sat. morning and .... pass the traffic at stop lights, slow down, then continue throught the red light if there is no cars entering the intersection.

The other bicyclist I just seem to love are the people who think they must still ride on the opposite side of the road or against traffic. In VA it's ride with traffic, walk against traffic.
