Re: 2014 salary cap....and the money we have
The Redskins need an influx of talent, but the main focus is still going to be the draft. They just need to take this three win team and make sure they have a seven win team going into draft day. Free agents can help put the professionalism back in the organization, but the ascension is going to have to come on the backs of youth.
Put the premium on speed on both sides of the ball and tackling on the defensive side. Shopping list: -Re-sign the best pass rusher on the market -Re-sign Perry Riley -#1 receiver -#1 corner -2 versatile guards that can hold up in pass protection -A competent (cheap) tackle that can compete with Tyler Polumbus in camp -Veteran ILB -Big 3-4 defensive end who actually has a pass rush move or two That's 8-9 signings, including two re-signings. The #1 receiver is really going to be more of a 1a receiver. True #1 don't hit the market. So your model is really the Chicago Bears (who got Jeffery in the second round). Two nominal #1 types are as good as one stud. And Garcon can be a nominal #1 as long as he's not the best pure receiver in the group. I'm not totally sold Hankerson won't become that player, but you can't wait on him any longer. He's in a contract year.

Re: 2014 salary cap....and the money we have
Here are the veteran releases:
-Chester -Bowen -Carriker -Paulsen -Paul -Doughty, probably -Fletcher, Morgan, Meriweather all have termination options built into their contracts. Move across the board. You can release other veterans later if you draft replacements, but those guys are frivolous at the moment.

Here are the seven players I would target:
- WR Hakeem Nicks OR WR James Jones (Not both) - OT Anthony Collins - G Chad Rinehart - G Mike Pollak - DE/DT Randy Starks - LB Daryl Smith - CB Brent Grimes

Re: 2014 salary cap....and the money we have
I seriously don't know what else people expect Garçon to do to prove he's our legit #1 wr. I'd like a solid #2 who can also be a 1a type wr like Decker or Nicks and obviously o-line and secondary are the main areas of need.

It would be more obvious if he had more long pass plays on his resume. But I think that this is not his fault.

He is a legit number one. The problem with Garçon is he hasn't made enough game changing plays to be nationally recognized.

Jones is a good #2 guy. Though he can be inconsistent at times.

Too many stop gaps here. Collins would be a good signing. Problem is doesn't he play left tackle?

From that list, I like Collins, Rinehart (should never have let him go), Daryl Smith and Grimes. James Jones too, if we can't draft a #2 WR. He's been around for a while, but only 29 and solid. He'd be a big upgrade over Hankerson/Morgan/Moss/Robinson. Morgan and Moss are probably gone. Moss can still play but not for what we're paying him. Morgan has been overpaid from day 1 but with the cap penalty, he's the best we could afford.

I say keep Niles Paul, he's our best ST player.

Re: 2014 salary cap....and the money we have
I would say that much differently. The amount of cap space we'll have is near endless. The problem is there won't be enough impact players available who fit our system, so Bruce will do the smart thing and find stopgaps instead of overcomitting to players who don't fit.

1) improve the roster 2) do so without costing a contract that will look bad in the future So the team may have 14 spots where improvement is needed, but if you can get five or six reasonably priced players (reasonable is relative, you can give big bucks for a great talent) to come in and plug holes, you've done well. And you still have 7-8 holes. The good news is that there are zero teams who will enter next season with no holes (even Seattle is going to have some issues on the OL), so the goal of the offseason isn't to fill all the holes. It's to take a situation that's bad (we have too many weaknesses) and add players who can help. Level the playing field a bit, so that when you draft/develop your stars: Griffin/Williams/Morris/Orakpo etc, the veterans on the team are competent enough to handle their assignments.
