i liked morton. he does have explosiveness when returning punts and kicks, it just wasn't used to the fullest potential. but it seems he's on the chopping block now so i don't think he will be on the roster after june 1st. i guess that means santana moss will be taking over the primary duties on returning special teams.

I just read that if we cut Morton this year we would save a little over $500,000 on the cap, but next year we would take a $1 mil. dollar hit.........anybody still think we are cutting Morton.........?????

I DO think we are cutting Morton, but if we DO keep him, I think he could at least be utilized as a return man with Brown.

You hit this one right on the head; it isn't the guy with the ball lin his hand trying to run the kick back that is the problem; it is the blocking - or should I say the absence of the blocking. I don't happen to think Morton is any great shakes as a returner; I think he is no better or no worse than your average special teams return guy but when you marry his average skill with sub-par blocking you create a real problem for your football team. There are plenty of guys on the squad who can catch punts/kickoffs and carry the ball forward. What the Skins need to find and develop are guys who can and will block efficiently (no penalties) and effectively (knock down guys in the other color jerseys) on at least 75% of the special teams plays. Matty: If Morton gets even one vote for MVP this year, the Skins will probably be 16-0 in the regular season and have generated an average of 9 points a game on special teams. Hey, it COULD happen...

I've always liked Morton since we signed him, but he isn't the greatest. Everyone seems very high on Brown, but wouldn't you think there was a reason he was available mid-season when Morton went down? The guy is a burner, but does he have the skills needed to be successful long-term?
I agree with SC in that the biggest part of the return game is the blocking, and have stated before I tend to think that Brown (and others) had more success later in the season because the blocking (and/or blocking schemes) had improved. Yeah, a good return man is nice, but if he doesn't have space to get going, or any lanes to run through, he's never gonna get very far. Oh, but of course BOTH of them are 1st ballot HOF locks!!! :headbange |
