Plus it just makes us look bad if we sign him to a multi year big money deal, and then during a slump next season he is benched for somebody....
It's a little crazy to think that the guy who just had the Redskins best qb season since '99 Brad Johnson would still believe a guy who can't execute a 5 step drop could be a threat against him.

Don't you remember? The 40 mil signing bonus? The average annual value rivaling that of the league's elite? Oh wait I'm thinking of JaMarcus Russell's contract. RG3's was after they went to the current system, where rookie contracts are slotted based on where you're drafted. So in conclusion, you are absolutely right his contract was very reasonable.

By overspending I mean giving up all the draft picks. More like over-investing than over-spending. RG had one good year and now looks to be the biggest bust in Skins history. The Skins are reluctant to risk another to over-investment in another potential one and done QB.

I think a lot of people also think he's already been paid that $16M 5th year option, which he hasn't.

I don't think we overspent on Griffin but I do believe Scot will eventually pay kirk 18M or so a yr. Also they can tag him 2 years in a row if need be but I'm sure it'll get done eventually.

The tag next year will be $24M... It's best for both sides to get a deal done now.

I honestly don't think one situation has anything to do with the other. RGIII isn't McCloughan's or Gruden's guy so there's no emotion tied in the player or how he got here. And Snyder has never been afraid to spend.

It just comes down to it being very early in the process, and getting a deal done that makes sense for both sides. These things take time.

RG3 isnt McCloughan's or Gruden's guy but he is Snyder's guy and no matter what anyone says Snyder still has input into the decisions. Snyder definitely isn't afraid to spend but I do think he doesn't want to look bad again.

I don't think its very early in the process anymore but I do think there is still plenty of time to get this done.

Re: Better days ahead. (Off season part 1 thread)

No further talks are scheduled, the source told Schefter. Another source recently told ESPN that the two sides were not close in earlier discussions and that the gap had not been closed in the ensuing weeks.

Kirk Cousins, Washington Redskins break off contract negotiations

Im really curious to know what Cousins and his agent Mike McCartney want.

If he wants more than 17-18 mil per for 4 years, 50% guaranteed .. i wouldnt hesitate to tag him.

I think Cousins has high value in this system throwing the ball to Jordan Reed/Jackson/Garcon. I think Cousins does not do as well on the 31 other teams.

I dont mind the idea of tagging him and letting him prove himself for another year.

if he wants to gamble that he has a healthy and equally productive 2016 and not take the "your family is set for life" offer now .. god bless him and good luck.

Cousins you are one blown 1 acl away. Take the guaranteed money my friend. You are looking at 35 mil or so guaranteed no matter what happens ... but you want to roll the dice for a few mil more?

good luck with that.

Re: Better days ahead. (Off season part 1 thread)

There are a couple facts about Cousins and the Skins:

Cousins will be back next year...whether its a tag or a deal, and I really don't care.

The other fact is Bruce and McC are not doing a stupid contract. Vinny is long gone and even the Bruce contracts, hit or miss, are not bad contracts.

The story of the Cousins contract is gonna get...already actually... annoying this offseason.

IMO KC and his agent know the Skins really have no viable replacement at QB. Colt isn't a starter and RG's ship has sailed with this coaching staff. Bringing in a free agent who can start wont be much cheaper and it will be another lost year while he learns the system/playbook. I have to believe KC and his agent are using this as a bargaining chip to try to get more out of the Skins and I dont blame them but its obvious to anyone paying attention that what's best for all is to KC to resign.

I'm sort of in the camp of tagging him this year, letting him prove himself, and rewarding him next year. Might be a bigger contract, but at least you know Cousins is definitely for real. Anyway, wouldn't teams have to give up first round picks to grab him this year if he's tagged? If so, tag him and take that chance.

i like the skins bargaining chip - well just tag you at 20 mil and let you decide to walk away from fair guaranteed money in the hopes you dont get hurt or regress.

every single snap, whether in practice or regular season, could be your last. an acl injury puts him out for the year, then he rehabs, has to re-prove himself .... suddenly he is 30 and a question mark.

cousins still has some to prove. i have him penciled in as a 10-15 best QB, i think he thinks he is top 10 written in permanent marker.

the guy had 8 or so really good games.

------------------------

if Cousins wants north of 20 mil per, why even negotiate with him? that is about the tag money but without the long term commitment.

For sure the Skins have bargaining chip or two as well. I have no problem with KC getting as much as he can get and I have no problem with the Skins wanting the best deal for themselves. I just hope nobody does anything stupid that creates so many hard feelings that it poisons the well.
