Redskins Draft Analysis Thread

For those of you who don't have ESPN insider, here's Todd McShay's take on our draft:

Washington Redskins

Best move: Trading back from No. 10 to 16
The Redskins used the 16th pick acquired from Jacksonville on DE Ryan Kerrigan, who will never be elite but is the kind of quality player and character guy the organization needs. It was a patient move and sent the right message. You could argue Washington had more holes than any other team heading into the draft, and getting WR Leonard Hankerson with the 49th pick (also acquired in the deal) got the Redskins a player who could easily be a starter for them.
Most questionable move: Dejon Gomes in the fifth round
Washington could have gotten a better safety at that point, someone like Ahmad Black. Or how about bringing in a developmental quarterback like T.J. Yates?

All in all I think that htis draft should serve as proof that our FO understands where we are as a team, rebuilding. Also, they were savy enough to stockpile picks and manuever to get players who they targeted to fit their system. A true youth movement has started. And I LOVE our first 4 picks....as well as Neild and Royster.

More importantly, not reaching for a QB or taking one that we weren't high on could have potentially saved us from making a HUGE mistake. Looks like; Gabbert = Kerrigan, Hankerson and Helu. I'll take that.

Well, I didn't care especially for Gabbert. And don't get me wrong, I love that we stocked up on draft picks.

But I find it hard to believe there wasn't a single QB in the later rounds we could have taken. Will Rick Stanzi, for example, be better than Beck? Who knows. But I'd rather take a chance on a guy that's fresh out of college than rely (for now at least) on a 30 year old who in four years hasn't really shown much (unless, of course, he's the next Trent Green and I'm just not seeing it)

I understand times have changed, and the rules are different, but during Gibbs 1.0 he drafted a QB I think like 9 out of 12 years. I believe you should always have one young QB on your roster, but maybe that's just me

I can't help but wonder if the "never will be elite" is in part due to him being a white dude. After all, Kerrigan's measurables are actually VERY similar to Anthony Spencer's, but Kerrigan has a better motor and is more adaptable. If anything, he COULD be Orakpo-lite for all we know.

SS how would VY fit into our scheme? And MS said Beck was his overall number 1 QB in that draft so it seems like he really thinks highly of him

Umm Jared Allen, Clay Matthews, Justin Smith are all white and are all damn good DE/LB's.. Clay may be the best OLB in football outside of Ware.

I think Kerrigan is a solid player but a guy that has limits due to his speed, he's not a great athlete either. I'm thinking a Kyle Vanden Bosh type guy

LOL well thats true, Mike is pretty quiet about the team. I think Vince under MS/KS could be dangerous

Also a nice note on Orakpo. His numbers through two years are very similar to Ware's before he broke out in year 3 and posted 14 sacks.

Orakpo
Year 1: 11.5 Sacks
Year 2: 8 Sacks

Ware
Year 1: 8.5 Sacks
Year 2: 11 Sacks

2. The Washington Redskins have finally embraced the draft concept
After abdicating the draft altogether in some seasons through the Vinny Cerrato era (or at least it seemed that way; there was the one year in which Vinny tried to give the Bengals about half his picks for the aforementioned Senor Ochiconco), Mike Shanahan has endeavored to turn over a new leaf in the nation's capitol. Trading down multiple times to get several extra selections, Shanahan and GM Bruce Allen picked up several defenders who look to be better fits in Jim Haslett's hybrid defense, including Purdue DE Ryan Kerrigan(notes) and Clemson DT Jarvis Jenkins(notes). Getting players who actually fit the hybrid defenses you're playing? What a concept!

I'm with you on the idea that you should always have a young QB. It's very sensible. Also, I would rather have gotten Stanzi in the 5th than Gomes, although we would have needed to trade up to do it.

We never should have let the great Rich Bartel go. Or your boy Chase, for that matter. Maybe we'll get someone like Devlin once FA starts.

Or Jimmy Clausen...
