Re: Around the Nfl week 1

well, nascar's radio footprint and complexity far exceeds the NFL and they never seen to have troubles.

If you're a billion dollar business, you could go spread spectrum frequency hopping/encrypted if you want to be immune to basically all cross talk and single band jamming (they'd have to jam the entire spectrum if you're hopping).

most of these setups are just telex or clearcom systems that are (or should be) 95% wired, with the last bit being an antenna to the coach's wireless headset. you get at least 150' line of sight (usually 300'+, but you can stronger amps or more directional antennas if you want). technically if you wanted you can set up a raspberry pi system to transmit 2 miles, but i don't know any standard intercom system needing/using that (land mobile radios are a thing that already exists in that space, and can also be hooked to headsets).

if they're having this kind of trouble, it's simply because they're not trying. it's something no one thinks about until they have to use it, but if someone competent was running it, it'd be fine (i assume w/ 32 stadiums and 16 in use every weekend, you have some B teams running around and that's the main cause of the issues).

shoot, I can probably tell you exactly what happened. the tech crew thoroughly tested and checked the wireless headsets and made sure they all had separate non-interfering frequencies, BUT they made the mistake of checking them while all the wireless broadcast systems were off, leading to the possibilities of frequency sharing (or the pack could have been put on multiple channels (most packs have A/B, you can be on both at once, though the systems should be completely walled off, so that'd be bad design). the other thing that can happen is if packs from the two systems are VERY close to each other (like a tech having them back to back on his belt) they can cross talk... if you put your cellphone in your pocket right next to where you hang your telex pack, it becomes very unreliable).

either way chances are this isn't cheating, it's just standard intercom problems, which are actually very common since it's usually never treated as mission critical, and non techs always seem to have problems with them even when they're working perfectly anyways.

Hell I can't get wireless mice (2.4GHz radio) to work 4 feet from my computer half the time. There is a weird issue in my home that is killing it or it's too close to being the same frequency of my Wifi router. Radio is dead.. You clearly have knowledge on this subject, I always assumed the NFL was using the setup you mentioned at the top, are they actually using basic radio coms? NASCAR went away from basic radio probably 10-15 years ago, why wouldn't the NFL have done the same?

And Parcells would open the field door of the stadium and create a cross wind for the kickers and receivers that would drive them nuts, everyone bitched but nothing was ever done.

because they're too busy counting their money? seriously, if it's important to them, it's a fixable problem.

I can not believe Motorola is all that happy paying millions of dollars to have their logo plastered on communication equipment that people claim doesn't work.
