Also, the team was winning with Alex's "no mistakes" brand of football. Not the way people liked it, but they were winning. And things would have been a hell of a lot better, had Alex stayed healthy.
The Redskins were winning with Smith in very close games last year - games which could have gone either way based on just one or two plays. I think our opponents were starting get the measure of Smith - what he could do well and also what he could NOT do and were changing their defenses based on his style of play. The defenses were really starting to shut him down. IF he had stayed healthy last season, I don't think we would have won many more games.

Alex Smith's style of play can help a very good team win games. But those very good teams let him go because his upside is so very limited. If he was a real franchise QB, his former teams wouldn't have dumped him. Bruce Allen mismanaged Kirk Cousins (who we should have let go) and then paid a top salary on a long contract to an aging QB who is decent but not the future QB of this team.

If smith hadn't been hurt, which no one could predict, I think we would have seen why other teams dumped him. He's going to be a cap black hole and will never play a regular-season game for the Redskins.

My complaint:

1.Very average QB coming off career year with an offensive guru.
2. Was 33 turning 34 in May when we got him
3. Too long of a contract
4. Decision maker was Bruce Allen, an extensive history of poor handling of the QB position

In terms of Alex season, AP was the MVP, Smith was a benefactor of his success. Plus they were peaking as an offense. Smith was having another garbage game when he got hurt.

You're so right! Bruce, hired an aging, VERY AVERAGE QB for a long contract. Why? In the NFL you need an elite, franchise QB to win consistently, season after season. The truth is that Bruce Allen is happy to be average. Only with a potential franchise QB, like Haskins, can this team move up the ladder to the next level.

So Dak wants 30M a year but as I've said since day 1, he's Alex Smith 2.0.

Here are the numbers as of today..

% YPA NET TD/INT
Dak Prescott - 66.1 7.4 6.4 2.68
Alex Smith - 66.1 7.4 6.6 2.83

I don't get how/why people don't get that QBs are overpaid and that's how things are in the NFL.

It's the same tired debate anytime the next guy's time is up.

Re: If Smith returns....HYPOTHETICALLY speaking.....

QB is the most important position on the team. Having a franchise QB, who can win close games for you, is the difference between being an average team and being that next level up or even being an elite team. That's why QB salaries keep going up.

My problem was not with how much Alex smith got paid. My problem is that Bruce Allen gave him a contract that's too long.

But thats how you make a qb salary cap friendly. It s**ks that Alex got catostrophically hurt in the first year, but if Alex had taken a shorter deal the cap hits without his injury would have been far less manageable. Thats the risk every FO takes.

DP is in a great spot. Timing is everything. Yeah he's an average QB but that doesn't matter. Average NFL QB's that are durable are going to get paid. Cowboys have no choice but to pay him and pay him a lot.

Re: If Smith returns....HYPOTHETICALLY speaking.....

I just re-read the original USA Today article which I hadn’t seen in a year. The main points in the survey is about the team’s negotiator in terms of:

Preparedness

Trust

Bruce Allen is LAST in the NFL. I don’t know how anyone could paint this as being good for the team. It has nothing to do with being a tough negotiator. I’m not backing Trent Williams holdout but he did mention not trusting BA as an issue.

I will know the Redskins franchise is finally turning around when Bruce Allen is fired.

He is one tough, optimistic son of a gun. I'd be way beyond defeated by now.

He could lose $16+ mill in signing bonus money and $46Million in salary if he retires.

For that kind of money I would let you go "Misery" on me 17 times.
