Re: Let's talk good beer
DTC on friday is tapping a keg of Maine's another one and will be pouring glasses only of firestones helldorado.
i looked up helldorado and it is am american barleywine at 13.2% abv. sucks bc that sounds like something id love to slowly sip in front of my tv vs having to drink on my way home from work. just read, $7 for a 4 oz pour .... the prices are getting ridiculous. at some point we have to push back. im still pissed i spent $23 some odd bucks for a sixer of secret sauce which ended up being a watered down dipa. life is so tough.

My buddy said Toaster Pastry was good. I may have to grab a can.
Nothing new from me. Just enjoying my Born Yesterdays, and will have a ChopDank and a few chocolate stouts this weekend.

Re: Let's talk good beer
Grabbed a few stouts for International Stout Day on Thursday. 4 Hands Chocolate Milk Stout is quite tasty. Also got a 4 pack of OB Ten Fidy, which is in another world man. So thick pouring yet a luscious mouth feel.
Went to White Oak Tavern in Ellicott City on Friday night. Not quite 40 taps, had some cool stuff, some boring stuff, some weird stuff. Interesting thing was all drafts were the same price, they just changed the pour size. Some were 16, some were 12, 10, 8, etc. Weirdest was an imperial marzen they decided to put on nitro. Marzens are supposed to be light and drinkable. This was thick and had a strange after taste. Felt like you could cut it in chunks. The head stayed throughout the beer.

Re: Let's talk good beer
I had a good beer weekend.
growler of clown shoes galatica - always good. port city's monumental ipa - as my easy drinker beer. really need to get some 51 rye, at 6% its a tasty beer with a manageable abv for sundays. kinda hurting today. rar grapefruit nectar - really grapefruity. pretty good. not sure i could drink more than a few at a time. 21st amend ipa - super super fresh, had to buy it. founders breakfast stout - love having a stash of this in the basement and remembering i have a stash of this in the basement. maines MO - real fresh, real citrusy clean. not my fav Maine selection, but its hard to pass up on a bottle of anything from them bc you only see a bottle or 2 every other month. i need to get some GD farmhouse ale or a saison or something lighter.

Re: Let's talk good beer
Ballast Point being bought out for a cool 1 BILLION dollars ... wow.
" Additionally, the bottom 60% of households in income now consume 40% of the nation’s craft beer volume. The Brewers Association pushes craft beer as an “affordable luxury,” and this is obviously catching on." -------- Bottom Line The acquisition of these craft breweries by Big Liquor simply makes sense. Time and time again, and throughout every sector, we see that one of the main obstacles to increasing profit margins is scale. While these local breweries could certainly benefit from nationwide sales, expansion costs would probably be too much for them right now. Now that they are in the hands of Big Liquor, these companies can leverage existing resources to expand affordably. The real question will be whether the big brands can maintain the homemade quality that gives craft beer some of its appeal. On top of that, it will be interesting to see whether “hip” young consumers move onto new local breweries as their old favorites get bought out. If one thing is for sure, it’s that people love drinking craft beer. Whether the same consumers will continue to drink craft beer brought to them by Big Liquor remains to be seen, but this could end up being a major cash cow for the industry leaders. http://finance.yahoo.com/news/craft-...211409534.html I have no problem with someone like Ballast Point selling out to big biz. As long as the quality is still there, it might make the same beer cheaper. I would love to see sculpin at 10-12 a sixer vs the current 14-16. ballast point is pretty much a big biz beer now anyhow. Honestly i hope russian river gets sold out so they will distribute out here. i doubt that dude vinny would sell out bc he seems obsessed with his product but i would love to be able to pick up a bottle whenever .. or at least ship it directly to customers so you can control the quality.

Re: Let's talk good beer
I have no issues with Ballast Point selling to Constellation. I think some people get their panties in a wad over these deals, but there is no way I'd say no to a billion dollars. I think the pressure is on the big boys to keep these products on the same, if not better, level that the smaller guys are currently at. Hopefully these smaller guys make these deals with their product in mind, as opposed to just a cash grab.
I don't see Russian River selling out at any time in the near or distant future. Like you said, they are so particular about their product that I don't see them wanting anyone to undermine that. I'm splitting a case of Oskar Blues' Death By Coconut with some friends. I pick it up tomorrow. Can't wait to try it.

Re: Let's talk good beer
DTC has this beer Oxbow farmhouse pale ale ... looks pretty good, expensive at $16 for 32 oz. they also have maine lunch coming up on tap but knowing them they will only do pours and not growlers. they had "another one" and were doing only pours.
