Re: Can the redskins beat the lions without portis and moss

Moss is out. The Washington Post reporter who follows the skins got this from a team official. Moss could be out beyond the Detroit game. I think Portis will play but sparingly.
That said, we should win this game, and if we don't I think it's a turning pt downward for the team. We need to control the clock through this game and if Betts can get into a rythm running downhill it will happen. Lions are week defensively anyway. I've said before that Thrash in place of Moss isn't too bad a situation. Thrash has good talent getting open and best hands on the team. Caldwell will get work in the game too, and I think he will be a big surprise for us. Anyway, I think we are the superior team by far, and this should be a big win. Defense has to step up, but Smoot should be healthy (and hungry) and I think Landry and Taylor are due for some huge plays.

Hogs.net. I cannot remember the name of the Post reporter. Basically, a blogger emailed that reporter asking if there was an update and then posted the reporter's response on the site. Moss was said to be out possibly beyond the Lions game. I don't think this should be a surprise to anyone. He gets hurt at least a couple times a season and usually heals slowly. But I'm also saying I don't think it should be that big a deal. Time of possession will be huge this Sunday, and w/ Thrash (in for Moss) getting open and consistently catching passes I think we can still have a real effective passing game to set up the run.

Re: Can the redskins beat the lions without portis and moss

For those wondering, this is what MTRedskinsfan is referring to (I think)

Quote:
I e-mailed Jason La Confora and he personally told me that Moss was out for more than one game and McCardell is being signed due to injury. Here is exactly what he said:

From: "Jason F LaCanfora" <lacanforaj@washpost.com>
Date: Sun, 30 Sep 2007 17:44:29 -0400
To: "Robert Hunt" <fands57@yahoo.com>

I think santana is going to miss a few games don't see them dumping lloyd till after the season.
Cheers
To be clear. This is what JLC thinks is going to happen. While he may be right, if we went with what he thought all the time then Dre Bly would be a Redskin.

Anyway, last I've heard Moss is officially day-to-day...but then again aren't we all.

Moss and Portis or not, I think that the Skins will play with the same desperation that the Giants did in the 2nd half here. Losing a 2nd consecutive home NFC game could cause the season to unravel pretty quickly. Hopefully the players feel that and bring their A-game on Sunday. I want to see Landry and Taylor inflicting serious pain to any Lions receiver venturing over the middle.

Yeah, GREAT source there. Here is what I found on Moss.

Quote:
Despite reports Santana Moss (groin) could be out several weeks, coach Joe Gibbs says he doesn't "anticipate" being without the wideout in Week 5.
Moss, who missed practice Monday, says he hopes to play against Detroit, but doesn't know for sure. Keep track of his practice load this week before using him. Indications are so far that Moss is less than 50-50 to suit up.

I am listening to The John Thompson Show on 980, and the only thing they are talking about now is why are there different versions of how and when CP's injury occured. I didn't know, or think, that Portis's injury was that bad. May be that was the reason after all.

Re: Can the redskins beat the lions without portis and moss

Portis is a guy who has a lot of wear and tear on him. Unfortunately he's going to struggle with injuries as long as he continues to play.

The real good thing is that he really hasn't appeared to have lost any effectiveness, so when he is taking carries, he's doing well with them.

It's not sounding good for Moss.

Re: Can the redskins beat the lions without portis and moss

I'd bet Moss will miss the next 2-3 games.

CP will probably see his workload reduced a bit but his sprain isn't that serious, it's just a matter of playing through the pain.

Re: Can the redskins beat the lions without portis and moss

Injuries with Portis and Moss is not the biggest issue concerning our team. If Fred Smoot isn't at least 90%, we are in for a long day because Rodgers and Springs cannot cover for 60 minutes. The 2nd half of the Giants game was an indication of a secondary that could not cover and close on 3rd downs. On the other hand, I am looking forward to seeing Reche Caldwell and Keenan McCardell. Both are good route runners and can create separation which seems non existent on 3rd downs. Overall, Betts needs to get the majority of the reps in order to establish a rythm and Cartwright and Sellers should help us with a victory.
