If the Skins could get Chris Long I would literally run laps around my neighborhood singing the good news. If Long isn't a top 3 pick, however, then every personal person on those three teams should be fired. I watched him play all year and the guy is simply amazing. 14 sacks from a 3-4 end, getting double and triple teamed every play, relentless motor, great fast twitch, good leader. Much better prospect than Glenn Dorsey (IMHO) though I guess Dorsey was playing hurt for a good part of the year. Can't say enough good things about Chris Long. It would take a big trade for the Skins to be in position to get him (unfortunately).
Unless his stock falls hard between now & the draft. It's quite possible. The combine can do that to great college players. I remember Terrell Suggs stock falling when the scouts saw his 40 times, but he's had a pretty solid career w/Baltimore.

Re: THIS Years Free Agent Class Is Incredible!!

Since this thread mentioned the fa corners, it got me thinking, does anyone know Champ's cap situation in denver? It may sound crazy now, but he's been there 4 years & his deal might be backloaded. Plus, they signed a lot of big $ free agents during that time.

I would be surprised if he's cut, but if he's due a big bonus & they try to restructure him, who knows? I know it's unlikely he'd want to come back here, but the thought certainly has crossed my mind since Smoot came back. Those two are good friends.

And if we do keep him, I still think we should draft a CB in the first round to groom into a starter in a year or two (Talib or Cason remain my favorites); though I keep hearing Derrick Harvey attached to the Redskins come draft time. Still early though.

If we do go the free agent route, I think we should keep any eye on Nnamdi Asomugha (sp?) from the Raiders. I think he can and will opt out. And he's the type of big, physical cornerback that Williams likes.
Not sure about Cason... Talib is very good however saw them both play this year.

Yes. I used to watch this when I was overseas in the Navy. Iceland received BBC so there were a ton of Black Adder reruns. When I came back and House started up, I couldn't believe the difference in character...

I think the skins shouldnt always be worried about the great players that are free agents and start to try to build a team from the draft. You look at a "dynasty" like the patriots or a very good team like the cowboys. They went from the draft and don't buy every player that looks good on paper and has a few highlights. Tono Romo came from the 6th round or something like that and is now one of the best QB's in the whole league. That's what the skins need to worry about. the DRAFT.

Re: THIS Years Free Agent Class Is Incredible!!

The Pats did build from the draft for the most part but did throw a LOT of money out there this past free agency period (Moss, Welker, Stallworth, etc). The cowboys throw money at people just like the redskins, but they don't have quite the rap we have b/c the media as well as much of America is enamored with their every move. If you think about it, prior to Romo (who is about 1 year ahead of JC in terms of development) and after Aikman, they have had some pretty bad QB's. They brought in the Pat's trash (i.e. Drew Bledsoe) as an FA and gave chances to garbage signees like Drew Henson and Quincy Carter. Henson and Carter were as bad or worse NFL QB's than Danny Wuerfel (sp?) and Shane Matthews, starters during one of the WORST periods of redskins history; the Spurrier era. People forget about how bad other front offices have been and have a tendency to magnify the mistakes of our staff.

Yes, true, the Patriots did throw some money out this year. But we found out the players that is best for the team, not the best players that are available. For example, Wes Welker was good sure, but he wasn't utilized to the potential that the Patriots saw. Welker was ultimitely used as a punt returner. He comes to New England and becomes a super star who is projected to catch over 100 passes and have over 1000 recieving yards.

Tom Brady was a 6th rounder (#199 overall pick)
Tony Romo was undrafted, and signed with Dallas as an UDFA after college.

But I concur, teams should build from the draft and mold that "core" group of players that will make up their team for several years, and then plug free agents in a key positions to complement.

Admittedly, New England has done this very well over the last decade. They had a solid core of players on both sides of the ball. All they needed last year was a serious recieving threat. So they went out and got Moss and Welker. And for good measure added Stallworth to the mix.

Yeah, if you do that, you'll be great. It just seems too simple. The skins have jason cambell who has shone little spirts of greatness, they just have to get the right people to join him to become a good and eventually great team.

I don't think Samuel is that good either that's why he will not be locked down by the Pats. He is good in there defensive scheme like Archuleta was in St. Louis pass on him please. Plus he stays with safety help over the top rarely he is 1-1 with a wideout.

I agree. There seems to be a progression. No team turns into a dynasty overnight. First a team has to build a solid, comparatively cheap, foundation through the draft. More then anything to make this foundation solid you need to start with the big boys; Olineman seem to be the most vital cog to any successful team. Well, certainly a great QB is necessary, but I doubt even Brady or Manning would have had nearly the same success this season behind the Redskins Oline. Besides that, we have a young talented QB, relatively young, quick wide receivers. I have no doubt that give the time Brady and Manning are given in the pocket that:

a. Moss and Randel el would get open more often, and

b. Campbell would have the time to through the deep ball with more consistency and accuracy.

I think this is the progression the skins need to go through to have an elite team:

This offseason: start with the basics . . . Offensive and Defensive lineman. Obviously we have some young, or at least not too aged, talent in both units, but we need an influx of young talent, especially on the O-line. And on the D line I think that most would agree that a replacement for P. Daniels is becoming very necessary, if we had another D end that could get to the QB even just as much as Carter does that we would have a lot more big plays on D. A good pass rush from the front four allows your LB's CB's and Safeties to create turnovers.

Into the future: Obviously we should not stop building through the draft, young talent is invaluable in this league. But once you have a strong foundation (like that Pats had going into last offseason) that is when you start picking up big names like Moss, or TO. Guys like that can change the dimensions of a good team, and make them almost impossible to keep up with, but if they're signed to a team with no foundation (ie. the Raiders for Moss) then that player will struggle and the team will get little return on their investment.

This team has another few years before it can conceivably have a chance to be an elite team. We have some incredibly talented players, if we build more of a foundation, we could be very good in the next couple of years. And then we can go after some big name guys to compliment the talent already acquired.

How reasonable is all this in the Gibbs 2.0 timetable? Well, not very. More likely then not Gibbs will be gone after next year, but that doesnt mean we should clean house when he is gone. Hopefully there is a smooth transition, and we make the appropriate progressions, and Gibbs 2.0 will b remembered for setting this team in the right direction. It seems very possible, but only time will tell.

The Denver Post - Champ not chafed by Clements' deal

found this old article from the offseason. Maybe it's not unthinkable that Champ might not be in Denver. Purely speculating, but at least the denver post is speculating that they'll need to take a good look at his contract.

Freddy I would love to have Champ back but with our cap situation the way it is now we would be the last place Champ goes to. Just reading that Champ's salary takes up some 10% of their cap is scary. I guess elite corners and franchise qb's are worth it, but it sure makes building any depth on your team next to impossible.
