This year was the first in a long while that Portis had to WORK to keep his job. Larry Johnson and Parker both were pushing him. I dont care what people said. Portis knew that it was shape up or ship out. Shanahan let him go in Denver because of a salary/holdout threat, and so CP knew he couldnt get away with it again here. Bottom line is, we are probably seeing Portis final run as a redskin. He is the last piece from the old regime that needs replaced. he wont be here next year due to his salary and the fact that this is his 3rd season in a row where he has missed games due to injury...

Rabach is the final piece to be replaced.

Here's hoping. God Rabach is awful.

Torain broke some good runs and showed good vision. Plus, Portis was pulled for him by Shanahan. They may have blamed it on the injury, but knowing Portis, you know that he wasn't going to take this lightly. So hell yeah, Torain pushed him. Oh, and for those 40 carries, he's averaging 4.6 yards a pop.

You know how Shanahan can bring down the discipline, like with what he did after Cooley's comments. A player who doesn't practice won't play is one of his mantras that he rarely deviates from, as we all know from the Haynesworth affair. Obviously, that would motivate Portis to run just as hard. NFL Players view each other differently than outsiders. They're a like fraternity. Portis likely had respect for both Parker's and Johnson's track records.

Do you actually have evidence of this? And please don't use the example of not playing in the preseason, because there was good reason for him not playing in preseason after he had gotten injured.

Now that Shanny has gotten him to work, CP as a 3rd down back would be ideal, and they won't be likely to find anyone to fill that role next year in the draft. |

re: Portis heard his groin "pop" (out 4-6 weeks)
Guess that could be the case, but my impression of the relationship was always that Gibbs made personel decisions but Vinny was the executor of the deals. This explains why so many draft picks went out the door during Gibbs II & during the Zorn years. e.g. it wasn't so bad that Vinny got Jason Taylor, but for a 2nd & 6th that was a steep price to pay. All the trades during Gibbs' time were lopsided & not in our favor.

Gibbs also said he didn't trust the draft. Not exactly his own words because I can't find the direct quote, but that's the gist of it.
