Re: Predict the 2009 Opening Day Roster

Well, I had Fincher making the team, and he was cut, so we'll have to slip Cody Glenn in there.

They could conceivably fit Mike Williams in instead of Edwin Williams, but I'm not seeing the benefit. What's the point of keeping the fallen prospect on the roster for development purposes instead of the actual prospect.

Zorn singled out Will Montgomery today as having already made the team. No big surprise, but he seems to have really done a good job as a strong backup center.

GTripp, what's your reasoning behind cutting Anthony Montgomery?

I'd be shocked if he got the axe.

I have a hard time seeing them keeping both him and Golston. It's a numbers game: you have a bunch of people who can play the 3 technique in pass rush situations: Daniels, Wynn, Alexander, even Carter or Orakpo in the mismatch department.

I don't think they'll go three deep at the nose position. Me, personally, I would keep Montgomery over Golston 100 of 100 times. But Golston is a Blache-guy, and Monty really isn't. So I think Monty is very much on the bubble for a variety of reasons.

But Monty is a starting caliber DT and he's still pretty young. If we don't have room for him, shouldn't we at least try to trade him?

Re: Predict the 2009 Opening Day Roster

I see. Unless he's fallen into complete disfavor with Blache and the rest of the coaching staff, I'll go out on a limb and say that Montgomery makes it while Renaldo Wynn gets the boot.

Last year they kept nine: Carter, Griffin, Golston, Montgomery, Erasmus James, Rob Jackson, Demetric Evans, Chris Wilson and Lorenzo Alexander.

I think I saw Philip Daniels playing DT the other night, BTW.

We probably tried to trade our surplus at the position back at the draft.

There is one suitor who makes sense now: Carolina. But if they aren't willing to give us a late round pick for him, there unfortunately is no market. And even then, if they think we will cut him loose, they will probably just wait..

There was also no reason to bench Montgomery after a breakout season in 2007 under Grilliams, but our lineup made up entirely of scrappy overachievers wouldn't have been complete without Golston. Basically, Monty was never in favor with Blache.

Ok, but you've got Renaldo Wynn making the cut -- what does he possibly bring to the table at this point in his career, other than to say that he's been around a long time?

Re: Predict the 2009 Opening Day Roster

the most I can come up with is 51. That's keeping only 8 dlinemen and 3 rbs.

24 Offense
24 Defense
3 ST

So the question becomes where does the one extra go on each side of the ball? I'd bet we end up with 4 RBs and 9 Dlinemen. The only other spot could be at LB where Henson or Young could make it.

Re: Predict the 2009 Opening Day Roster

QB: Campbell, Collins, Colt
RB: Portis, Betts, Cartwright
FB: Sellars,
WR: Moss, ARE, Thomas, Kelly, Mitchell
TE: Cooley, Yoder, Davis
OL: Samuels, Heyer, Dockery, Rabach, Thomas, Montgomery, Rhinehart, Bridges, Batiste

DL: Daniels, Haynesworth, Griffin, Carter, Golston, Montgomery, Alexander, Jarmon
SLB: Orakpo, Wilson
MLB: Fletcher, Blades
WLB: McIntosh, Thomas, Glenn, Young
CB: Hall, Rogers, Smoot, Tryon, Barnes
FS: Landry, Moore
SS: Horton, Doughty, Holmes

K: Smith
P: Suisham
LS: Albright

PS: Westbrook (last time), Williams, Daniel, Skolnitsky, Dutch, Mason, Aldirdge, Dorsey, Shelton

I know that I have said before that I thought that Colt would be cut, but based on the circumstances it would not be feesabile. I forsee Colt and Chase battling it out again next year before they release Colt. Chase can go on the practice squad and we can keep all four for another season. Chances are that no one would sign him from our PS. If we were to cut Colt however, he would be gone. Wynn gets cut again. There shouldn't be many suprises on here.

Westbrook isn't eligible for PS anymore. Pretty sure Mason and Shelton aren't either

I thought that Westbrook had 1 more year. If that is the case then do not quote me on the Practice squad then. I feel pretty confident in the regular squad though.
