I'm assuming you meant give the 2nd round pick and Champ Bailey for Portis. In hindsight, i'm sure most regret that trade now...especially given how Portis kind of petered out 3 years later. 2008 he hit the wall and no matter what excuses are made, his play dropped off dramatically. 2009 and i think reality has hit for even the portis fans. I respect Portis. I think his character and overall attitude is questionable at times, but there is no doubt he does the best he can on the field.

I partially blame the redskins "pound the rock" philosophy for him getting worn out. Somebody earlier in the year compiled a list of runningbacks and how many carries they have had vs. their production, and Portis was found to be at a high risk of breaking down. That was posted before this season, when the injuries absolutley caught up with him and he looked done. Looking at other backs on that list, Age had nothing to do with it if a RB didn't have as many carries. They had plenty that performed well into their 30's and higher. Earl Campbell comes to mind...

With that said, we need to move on from him and his bloated salary after this season. Especially with the prospect of an uncapped year...

I dont have a problem with the Skins pounding him, he's a RB and that's what you do with RBs. What I have the problem with is how much they paid him. You just dont pay RBs that much money because then you are really locked in with them.

Fun bit of news on his Yahoo profile:

Quote:
Nov 3 RB Clinton Portis is seventh in the NFC in rushing and has fewer attempts (120) than the six backs ahead of him.

cp will be here next year and it would be nice to see him split the carries with anyone but betts, preferably some one faster and younger

I hated the champ trade when it was made, but I think portis was a big part of Gibbs' success in 05 & 07 and a cornerstone of the team. However, look at that trade now & you still see how Denver got the best of us. Champ is still a great cb, we're overpaying an old, slow CP who has thrown his coach under the bus, and they got a 2nd round pick.

Champ is still very solid but not at the top of his game anymore.

What did that #2 pick become?

Re: Clinton Portis among players who have worn out their welcome

I do not want Merriman. Now, having said that I believe that his lack of production this season is due more to his knee than his lack of ability. I can easily see him being completely healthy and rehabilitated next season. I would not want to be the guy to take a chance on that though.

As far as trading Portis for another veteran... the name of the game is trade a veteran for picks. This is not baseball or wine, football players do not get better with age.

The Portis-Bailey trade was one of those trades where the Skins' hands were sort of tied and factors above and beyond football came into play.

Still, we've gotten (at least) five years and two playoff appearances from Portis. That's not bad for a running back in this day and age.

I think both sides got what they wanted out of the trade so IMO it worked out pretty good for both teams.

I have that Portis-Bailey trade in one of my exam's questions for our online Madden Franchise league. In my opinion, the Broncos won the trade because you don't find another good CB. Portis is a great running back, but most RBs don't stay good very a long time.
