My hope is that we'll get enough done in FA to do what you say.

I'd like to see the Skins take a chance on a versatile player who could become game breaker, such as LaMichael James, Brandon Boykin, or Chris Rainey.

Those 12 picks were all rookies. Some guys turn into starters over time. 5 were starter worthy last year and more could turn out to be starters.

Re: Draft Strategy after the first round

I am not sure they will resign hightower. With Helu and Royster playing as well as they did, they could bring in a lower round pick in the draft. As far as what they do, FA is going to be key with no 1st or 2nd as to what we do draft wise. I am sure they are looking to get Oline help from FA, then possibly add more picks in the 3rd and 4th to look for some Oline depth and maybe safety or corners in those rounds. Use the latter rounds to look for the Oline depth.

We really dont need to draft for Dline, LB's, RB's, WR, or TE.

I seriously doubt that the cap penalty would change the dynamic of taking 1 2nd round player vs 2 or 3 lower round players. The difference in combined cap hits would be minimal.

Re: Draft Strategy after the first round

3. Brandon Mosely, OT, Auburn
4. TY Hiltion, WR/RS, Florida International
4. Janeze Jackson, FS, McNesse State
5. Audie Cole, ILB, NC State
6. Keith Tandy, CB, WVU
7. Kelvin Beachum, OG, Southern Methodist

In having 2 4th rd picks we could jump back up into the 3rd and take an OG, ILB... This year's S class is pretty mediocre and underwhelming... Don't think we'd draft a RB... The WR class is deep, as is CB, and ILB.

I have said the same thing about Rainey for awhile. His interview not only at the senior bowl, but on SiriusXM NFL radio was terrible. He is a thug. He probably keeps a piece in his jock during the games. And I don't mean the one he was born with... Stay away.

Plus he was charged with stalking not long ago. I don't care how fast he is, he is an idiot.

Although the percieved quality of safeties availiable in the draft this year is weak, there's still a quantity of these guys who can play and will develop.

Re: Draft Strategy after the first round

If Offense.
1. Andrew Datko OT - FSU
2. Andrew Datko OT - FSU
3. Andrew Datko OT - FSU
4. Andrew Datko OT - FSU
5. Andrew Datko OT - FSU

If Defense
1. Vontaze Burfict (Captain Insano) - ILB - ASU
2. Vontaze Burfict (Captain Insano) - ILB - ASU
3. Vontaze Burfict (Captain Insano) - ILB - ASU
4. Vontaze Burfict (Captain Insano) - ILB - ASU
5. Vontaze Burfict (Captain Insano) - ILB - ASU

It's like Sofies choice *tear*

Seriously though, tell me if this guy falls to the third round due to injury concerns that you wouldn't want him?

Per PFW:
Quote:
Upside:
• Quick out of his stance
• Athletic and light on his feet
• Shuffles, slides and pushes rushers wide
• Places his hands inside and can pop and recoil
• Flexible hips to scoop and seal
• Understands positioning, angles
• Terrific character

Downside:
• Underdeveloped body
• Limited core strength (not stout to anchor vs. bull rush)
• Outmuscled at the point
• Not explosive on contact
• Lunges and slips off blocks
• Long-term durability is a concern
• Medical issues are serious — has a history of shoulder problems

The Way We See It:
An underpowered, intelligent, competitive, hardworking technician, Datko is a hunchbacked zone blocker who played left tackle at FSU, but is better suited to play the right side in the pros. Durability is a major concern and will drop draft standing.
Also per Scouts Inc:
Quote:
"Effective zone blocker with above average first step-quickness, balance and angles. Gets adequate hand placement and sustains once locked on. Above average body control and can cover up linebackers when works up to the second level. Average drive blocker that can wall off defenders but doesn't generate enough push. Lower body strength appears just average on film. Lunges at times and falls off some blocks. Here again shoulder injury appears to hinder ability to lock out on 2011 film."
You know what other Tackle prospect dropped to the third round due to durability concerns and switched from Left to Right Tackle?

Quote:
Winston was widely considered one of the best offensive tackles to enter the 2006 NFL Draft. However, an anterior cruciate ligament injury during his junior year made his draft stock drop, and several draft scouting organizations express slight worry over the possible implications of the injury and subsequent surgery on his play. His stock for the draft improved, however, when he ran a 4.93 40 yard dash at the NFL Combine. Also a standout student, Winston graduated in 3 years with above a 3.5 GPA and was a 2005 All-America selection.

I don't know why we'd need one, but we can always get one late in the draft or pick up an UDFA.

I see RT as a must to protect both ends, then start working on the interior.

Vick Ballard of Mississippi State and Edwin Baker of Michigan State grade out similarly to Helu. Decent vision, good speed, similar pre-draft grade.

Obviously Shanahan might not be looking for the next Roy Helu exactly but those two seem like candidates.

Other mid-round guys to look out for due to above average vision and one-cut run ability:

Chris Rainey - Florida

Ronnie Hillman - San Diego State

Lennon Creer - Louisiana Tech

And the highest rated vision among potential Shanahan Backs

Tauren Poole - Tennessee
Quote:
Underrated natural instincts as a runner. The more we study him the more impressed we are with his vision and feel. Has a good sense for penetration and knows when to change directions in the backfield. Feels the cutback lane opening and shows consistent ability to exploit it. Is patient and will let his blocks develop, but he's also a decisive runner that always seems to be working to get north. "
The following backs all are reported to have very good vision but are considered a risk to go undrafted. All are falling due to durability concerns. Shanahan has picked guys graded in this range before (Royster and Torain)

Jonas Gray - Notre Dame

Jeff Demps - Florida

Jewel Hampton - Southern Illinois

Bryce Brown - Kansas State

In short anyone from Florida should make us happy as should a certain back from Tennessee.
