Re: Santana Moss: Punt Returner
Spot duty only. don't want to lose Moss's ability as a WR due to an injury from returning punts all the time.

Re: Santana Moss: Punt Returner
I knew I'd hear the risk vs reward thing. So the scenario is he's plays all year at WR, w/ no punt return duties and we're one of the worst scoring offenses in the NFL. Hmmm...sounds alot like 2008.
We've got a little more depth at WR, put him in there at PR a couple times a game. Nothing to lose, play to win. A player can get hurt at any time. Hey, I get the injury thing. He's our best wideout, but let's face it guys, we've got to put some points out and I think that would be a major plus. |

Re: Santana Moss: Punt Returner
If the other WR's step up then it's a posibility.

Re: Santana Moss: Punt Returner
Did coaches ever give Thomas a look at as punt returner?

Re: Santana Moss: Punt Returner
If Moss is back their returning Punt's then that means we are not winning.

I don't think there is any team in the NFL with a true #1 receiver returning punts full time. There's a reason for that. I mean, I guess Hester is the Bears #1 wideout, but he hasn't come close to establishing himself as a receiver in this league. Santana is explosive back there for sure, but the cost to our receiving game is too high a price to pay. His hammy gets hurt enough as it is without him trying to play full time special teams. I wonder how Mason would do returning punts. He's got some burst.

Re: Santana Moss: Punt Returner
I would not put Moss in as a punt returner unless we needed a big return for the game winning driving. He is much to valuable to take the risk on him being injuried for Punt Return duty. Situational spot duty maybe not full time. If ARE can't do better early in the season than maybe they should give Devon Thomas a look. He has nice RAC skills. A Punt Returner needs to be fearless and secure the ball. Returning Kicks is much different than returning Punts.

Re: Santana Moss: Punt Returner
No way...as fragile as those hammys are! Put Devin Thomas back there. I thought they were going to use Aldridge as the return guy. His speed and shiftyness reminded me of Devin Hester a little. I thought that is why we brought him in camp from Denver.

Re: Santana Moss: Punt Returner
I think we have a consensus:
1. Devin Thomas for primary PR. 2. Santana for spot duty as PR. 3. We'll all throw up if ARE is the PR. It's settled, then. Somebody notify Zorn. |

Re: Santana Moss: Punt Returner
We can't afford losing Moss to a stupid injury. Put him back there for key situations, and thats it. I agree that Thomas should be back there just to see what he can do.

Re: Santana Moss: Punt Returner
I think Zorn's stubborness here may keep ARE returning punts, so people may want to have air sickness bags available. (i hope i am wrong)

Re: Santana Moss: Punt Returner
I'm bringing this thread back to life since we are desperate to score points. Anyone changed their minds? ARE needs to be out and SM needs to get the PR's that have a change of being returned. We need some points.
If I'm Jim Zorn, why keep any bullets in the gun? |

Re: Santana Moss: Punt Returner
Yeah why not.
But you know with our luck he'll break a big return, pull his hammy, get tackled at the one yard line, and fumble. That would just be so typical. |

Re: Santana Moss: Punt Returner
The last couple of games I have been paying attention to our punt returns and I think our biggest problem is blocking. I watch the other team just run right down the field and our guys hardly so them down. When El catches the ball he has someone right infront of him almost everytime and if he makes that persom miss he then has 3 other guys in his face. If you look the few times Moss has been back there this year he has not done much.
