2017 Redskins Salary Cap Status

Here we are, 2017. The current cap space, and potential course of action from the front office so we can all be informed on the impact of various moves.

Projected Salary Cap: $168.0M
Cap Space Carried Over from 2016: $15.0M

Redskins Cap: $183.0M

Entering 2017 Redskins Cap Total (Top 51): $120.0M
Retired: Kory Lichtensteiger $3.5M
Net Player Added to 51: ($0.5M)
Current Cap Room: $66.0M

Candidates for Release (Impact on Cap Space)
Releasing DeAngelo Hall clears $4.3M
Releasing Shawn Lauvao clears $4.0M
Releasing Ricky Jean-Francois clears $3.0M
Releasing Niles Paul clears $2.0M
Net Four Players Added Back to top 51: ($2.0M)
Cap Room Created (Used): $11.3M

Cap Room After Releasing Players: $77.3M

Resigning Redskins Free Agents (Impact on Cap Space)
Kirk Cousins Franchise Tag ($24.0M)
Pierre Garcon ($8.0M)
Chris Baker ($8.0M)
Vernon Davis ($3.0M)
Junior Galette ($1.5M)
Nick Sundberg ($1.0M)
Ziggy Hood ($2.0M)
Greg Toler ($1.0M)
Chris Thompson ($3.0M)
Will Compton ($4.0M)
Duke Ihenacho ($1.0M)
Net 11 Players Removed from Top 51 $5.5M
Cap Room Created (Used): $(51.0M)

Available Cap Room in Free Agency and Draft: $26.3M

Note: if a player is expected to cost vet minimum to resign like a Terence Garvin might, then I do not list them here because the cap impact of resigning them is a net zero, once you account for the impact of the player they displace from the top 51.

Note: if they don't release all five of the players I have listed here, they'd have less space.

Note: if they let some of their own free agents walk, like Garcon, they'd have more space.

What would you do? You can't resign everyone and still expect a free agent bonanza - there will be some choices to make. Want Kawaan Short? You'll probably need to let a WR walk.

Also the numbers shown here next to most player names are educated guesses at cap impact. Feel free to debate those, but they shouldn't be more than a million or two off for each player.

I would keep Niles Paul and Francois.

I probably would bring them to camp and let them battle it out with whoever I end up with the roster at that point. If we don't bring Davis back then it's more important to keep Niles. If we get Davis, and we already have Reed and Carrier too, I'm probably better off using the $2.0M in space for Niles elsewhere on the roster.

Ricky Jean is a character guy. I like him, I guess I'm just hoping we've got enough talent to bump him from the rotation next year. If we still need him in the rotation then I'm not sure I love my line talent.

But this is why I love the cap space stuff, it brings up all the armchair GM questions.

Re: 2017 Redskins Salary Cap Status

Schneed thanks so much.

Ill put it here, but I think our top 2 free agent signing should be Guard Ron Leary at LG and Benie Logan DT.

Leary been steady and was depth at the beginning of the year for the Cowboys b4 stepping in and excelling for the Boys. They cant afford him. He made 2.5 million, probably double that avg per year.

Bennie Logan had a down year for the Eagles due to injuries, new scheme and general ineptness by the eagles. Before that, he had improved every year at DT. He could be affordable.

Both these guys are entering prime and could help in the trenches.

Im down with keeping Ricky Jean as well. Id let Niles walk for sure.

I love Bennie Logan. He'd be a great get. I do think he'll be costly. Lots of teams saw the Eagles without him on the field due to that groin injury, and the difference he made when he returned.

He'd be a little more than Chris Baker.

I think I would let Niles Paul walk. He was ready to take a big step before his season ending injury - which of course led to Jordan Reed's breakout year - but since his return, he really hasn't done much. I think Vernon Davis is more valuable to us at this point.

Re: 2017 Redskins Salary Cap Status

I don't know if Id bring back Wil Compton, but I may look at Zach Brown, ILB from Buffalo or Gerald Hodges ILB from San Fran(patiently waiting for SFRED approval). I think for around equal dollars 4-5 million we would upgrade.

Adding 3 solid starters from free agency at LB, LG and DT/DE is the way to go. Along with 9 picks (to start) in the upcoming draft focused D-Line, Secondary, RB and WR...Id be extremely happy.

Re: 2017 Redskins Salary Cap Status

I agree with the approach to pursue solid starters. I would definitely hope McCloughan continues to avoid the "Day 1" free agents. The Giants got a pretty good player in Olivier Vernon but he's among the most highly paid defensive players in the NFL. That eventually comes back to haunt you.

I hope McCloughan lets the market set itself over the first couple weeks, but then pays the freight necessary to avoid being left with gaping holes at some of these key spots.

It's a fine line to walk but he's got to do it. We have some glaring needs.

I think it is decision time on KC. Another year with a franchise tag is not the answer. If they sign him to a long term contract his cap number could be much lower.

The same is true about Baker. A 3 year contract might be closer to $6 million the first year.

I do not want Duke or Toler back.

They must draft d lineman. They are to expensive to as free agents.

Question: Isn't $77.3 (room after releasing players)
minus $51.0 (cap room used to resign)
$26.3?

Seems the cap room available is $10 Million more than you say.

And I'm REALLY nervous about arguing numbers with the Schneed....

This. We don't need or have the room for day 1 free agents. But we have too many holes to fill through the draft. A couple trades or mid-level signings have to be done.

I would be okay if they let Compton walk.

I like the guy and I've said before I think DL and FS are absolute priorities, this D could be efficient with improvements at these 2 positions.

But he is clearly not physical enough, 4M more in cap space entering FA would be nice.

And we gotta aggressively draft defense anyway. So if we gonna have below average play at ILB I'd rather have it be because of rookie mistakes than mediocre player.
