Re: boxing/ UFC fans?

Didn't realize Holm was that good of a striker. She beat the crap out of Rousey. Just out boxed her and was clearly the more talented fighter. That kick to the head looked like it killed Rousey.

I wouldn't think so... Floyd's defense is (in Tyson voice) impregnable. Rousey basically bull rushes her opponents in order to get the clinch... she eats punches while doing so. Floyd would clock her before she could grab hold to anything (pre-Holm, most of Ronda's opponents were done as soon as she clinched).

The Slack article you linked mentioned the same things Floyd would use- angles and footwork. Ronda's relied on judo takedowns her entire career- the only way she'd be able to get Floyd on the ground is develop world class footwork and wrestling takedowns (namely singles and doubles... even then, she lacks the quickness to avoid a Floyd cross and the explosiveness to shoot in on a miss). At this stage of the game, there's no way she'd be able to catch up.

Re: boxing/ UFC fans?

Anyone catch the passing of two torches Saturday night? Rockhold took advantage of a dumb wheel kick by Weidman. Rockhold was seriously gassed before that kick, due to the anti-biotics he'd been on to treat a staph infection. Conor is the real deal... Aldo is one of my favorite fighters of all time, but I saw the writing on the wall months ago. The Irishman got into his head the first time around (hence Aldo pulling out) and it showed this time- when Jose uncharacteristically started the first flailing from the bell. He didn't return his throwing hand back to defend his own face... ultimately dooming him to such an accurate striker as Conor. It'll be interesting to see if Conor moves up to 155. I don't know if he's ready for RDA, so he's got to hope Cowboy somehow wins this weekend.

Rickson has some great quotes. My favorites are: "Punch a black belt in the face and he goes back to a blue belt. Hit him with a one two and he goes back to white." And "The ground is my ocean and I an a shark and most people don't even know how to swim."

The ocean metaphor is totally apt when explaining bjj to others. Do you train?

Re: boxing/ UFC fans?

I will watch for the spectacle of it. McGregor gonna get his ass kicked, but it won't be a knockout cuz that's not Floyd's style. All the shit talking nonsense is obv trying to get the fight hyped, because when you consider the semantics of it it's clear McGregor doesn't stand a chance. How are you gonna take somebody who's never boxed before and make him fight one of the greatest fighters' of his generation? Same reason anybody does anything else, both of them are gonna get hella paid. The clip of McGregor talking about quadrupling his net worth just confirms it. I think there is substance to the rumors of them sharing a jet everywhere, and McGregor getting KO'd by his trainer. But it comes down to the fact that McGregor has never boxed before. It's just another obvious money grab. Only thing I'm torn on is will it go 12 rounds or not?

Re: boxing/ UFC fans?

I am going to watch but at a bar tho no way I am shelling out coin for it. This match reminds me a bit of the 90s movie "The Great White Hype" except McGregor is actually aware of what is about to happen.

Re: boxing/ UFC fans?

Jarrett Hurd is my new favorite boxer. Fighting in Redskins trunks.

Then he proceeds to get his ass whipped by a dude from Philly. Sounds about right.

Re: boxing/ UFC fans?

Not worth a thread so I figured I'll ask in this "fighting" thread: anybody watching/having ever watched Sumo wrestling ?

I've started watching a couple of weeks ago, just wanted to understand what it was about, having this image of big fat dudes in diapers... man that shit is addictive, turns out to be some high level wrestling mixed with some Japanese culture and traditions, quite intriguing !

But it's like that with all things, when to starting to understand them more profoundly and deeply,, and how difficult to do a certain think,, you beginning to appreciate high level of a thing, cause you know how hard to do that or get there
